Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience with trailers, trucks, or small motors and preventive maintenance.
  • Hands-on trailer repair experience with flatbeds, low boys, RGNs.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude including diesel and small engines.
  • Proficiency with air brakes, air suspensions, and ABS.
  • Experience with hydraulic systems on trailers.
  • Ability to perform inspections and maintenance on fleet equipment.
  • Basic welding skills for minor repairs.
  • Comfort using automated maintenance or fleet management systems.

Job Description
Job Title: Trailer Mechanic

Join a skilled shop team as a Trailer Mechanic responsible for maintaining and repairing a variety of specialized trailers, including RGN, low boys, detachable trailers, flatbeds, and step decks. You will perform preventative maintenance, diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and braking systems, and ensure all trailers meet DOT and FHWA regulatory standards. This role involves hands‑on work in a shop environment, occasional driving to pick up parts, and accurate documentation of all maintenance activities using automated systems.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine inspections of trailer frames, decks, cross‑members, kingpins, landing gear, and suspension systems to identify wear, damage, or safety concerns.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance on trailers, including lubrication, torque checks, and scheduled component replacements to minimize breakdowns and keep equipment road‑ready.
  • Service and repair braking systems, including air brakes, air lines, chambers, slack adjusters, drums, and ABS components.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical issues such as lights, wiring harnesses, connectors, and 7‑way plugs to ensure proper trailer lighting and signaling.
  • Maintain tires and wheels by mounting, balancing, replacing, and inspecting them, as well as checking torque and alignment.
  • Perform engine‑related repairs, both external and internal, on diesel and small engines as needed.
  • Complete minor welding repairs and structural work, including welding cracked frames, replacing wood or aluminum decking, and reinforcing stake pockets or rub rails.
  • Conduct DOT and FHWA inspections to verify that trailers meet all applicable regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and repair ABS systems and hydraulic components on trailers.
  • Use an automated maintenance or fleet management system to document repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance activities accurately.
  • Handle paperwork and administrative duties related to work orders, parts usage, and inspection records.
  • Drive company vehicles, such as pickup trucks, to pick up parts and materials from stores or vendors when required.
  • Work independently in the shop, staying productive without the need for constant supervision, while collaborating with the team to complete work efficiently.
  • Follow all safety procedures in the shop, including proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective gear such as steel‑toe footwear.
  • Support fleet maintenance operations by performing general trailer repair, fleet maintenance tasks, and inspections as assigned.
Essential Skills
  • At least 2 years of experience working on trailers, trucks, or small motors and performing preventative maintenance.
  • Hands‑on experience with trailer repair, including flatbeds, low boys, and RGNs.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, including experience with diesel mechanic work and small engine repair.
  • Proficiency with air brakes, air suspensions, and ABS (anti‑lock braking systems).
  • Experience working with hydraulic systems on trailers and related equipment.
  • Ability to perform inspections and preventative maintenance on trailers and fleet equipment.
  • Basic welding skills for minor repairs and structural reinforcement.
  • Comfort working with automated maintenance or fleet management computer systems.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to document work clearly and accurately in work orders or maintenance systems.
  • Capability to work independently, manage workload, and follow through on tasks without constant direction.
Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Carlisle, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
