Job description

Position Summary

Responsible for performing preventative maintenance, special tank inspections and general repairs on tractor and trailer units in accordance with DOT, federal and state regulations and Company standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Diesel Truck Mechanic diagnoses and repairs tractors and trailers. Performs annual/systematic 90‑day inspection to ensure equipment meets federal FHWA standards. For cargo tanks, performs internal, external, and upper coupler inspections, heat system, leakage, vacuum, pressure tests and vapor tightness test (EPA Method27). Determines mechanical condition of tractors, trailers and associated equipment, diagnoses component malfunctions, and initiates repairs. Replaces worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned parts. Removes, repairs, adjusts, overhauls, assembles, disassembles, and replaces major assemblies, sub‑assemblies, components, parts or systems such as brakes, hubs, bearings, seals, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, steering, hydraulics; control linkages, clutches and traction units. Uses technical publications or automated systems to follow manufacturers’ maintenance schedules and to research parts. Properly annotates all maintenance and labor performed in maintenance management software. Operates a yard hostler truck to move trailers within the facility yard and the shop as needed. Communicates the need to order and receive parts and supplies. Adheres to all established safety (OSHA) and environmental policies and standards, including proper handling or disposal of hazardous wastes. Cleans, organizes, and maintains the work environment. Performs welding repairs as needed. Performs additional duties as assigned.The Diesel Truck Mechanic reports directly to The Shop Supervisor.

Requirements

Education and Experience: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Experienced in the use of inspection and test equipment used for cargo tank inspections.

Essential Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle and equipment theory, principles and repair relating to diesel engines, air, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems. Ability to effectively and efficiently inspect tanks and trailers to align with DOT standards (49CFR HM180.407). Knowledge of tractor and trailer maintenance, DOT rules and regulations, company policies and procedures. Ability to use vehicle diagnostic software.

Language Skills

Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently.

Physical Demands

Use arms to reach, stretch and manipulate tools. Use legs to stand for long periods, maneuver through shop environment, and perform locomotive functions such as crawling, kneeling, crouching, sitting and carrying or relocating objects up to 75lb. Perform broad locomotive motions, including bending, twisting, balancing, and reaching. Perform fine locomotive motions with fingers. Adjust and maintain postures as required. Visually identify objects at close and distant ranges, with ability to determine distances and colors. Use auditory senses to isolate sounds and recognize differences. Speak clearly and at necessary volumes in work environments with varying sound levels.

Work Environment

Shop may be susceptible to outdoor weather. Frequent exposure to loud machinery, air tool operation, hammering and engine noise. The position typically requires 0% travel and may involve confined spaces. Requires constant alertness and safety awareness.
