Job description

Position Summary

Responsible for performing preventative maintenance, special inspections and general repairs on tractor and trailer units in accordance with DOT, federal and state regulations and Company standards.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair tractors and trailers.
  • Perform annual/systematic 90‑day inspection to ensure equipment meets federal FHWA standards.
  • Conduct cargo tank inspections: internal, external, upper coupler, heat system, leakage, vacuum, pressure tests and EPA Method 27 vapor tightness test.
  • Determine mechanical condition of tractors, trailers, and associated equipment; diagnose component malfunctions and initiate repairs.
  • Replace worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned parts; correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub‑assemblies, components, parts, or systems (e.g., brakes, hubs, bearings, seals, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, steering, hydraulics, control linkages, clutches, traction units).
  • Use technical publications or automated systems to maintain vehicles according to manufacturer maintenance schedules and research parts.
  • Annotate all maintenance and labor performed in maintenance management software.
  • Operate a yard hostler truck to move trailers within the facility yard and shop.
  • Communicate need to order and receive parts and supplies.
  • Adhere to all safety (OSHA) and environmental policies and standards, including handling or disposal of hazardous wastes.
  • Clean, organize, and maintain the work environment to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety.
  • Perform welding repairs as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Report directly to the Shop Supervisor.
Requirements
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Experience with inspection and test equipment used for cargo tank inspections.
Essential Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle and equipment theory, principles, and repair relating to diesel engines, air, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently inspect tanks and trailers to align with DOT standards (49CFR HM180.407).
  • Knowledge of tractor and trailer maintenance, DOT rules and regulations, company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to use vehicle diagnostic software.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently.
Physical Demands
  • Use arms to reach and stretch; hands and fingers to grasp, move, or assemble objects of a variety of sizes, and to manipulate tools, devices, and controls.
  • Use legs to stand for long periods, maneuver through the shop environment, and perform locomotive functions (crawling, kneeling, crouching, sitting, carrying or relocating objects weighing up to 75 lbs).
  • Perform broad locomotive motions, sometimes rapidly, such as bending, twisting, balancing, and reaching, sustaining motions without fatigue.
  • Perform fine locomotive motions, sometimes rapidly, that involve fingers for tool manipulation.
  • Adjust postures and stances to accommodate changes in the environment.
  • Visually identify and focus on objects at close and distant ranges.
  • Use auditory senses to hear and isolate specific sounds, understand speech, and recognize differences.
  • Speak clearly and at necessary volumes in varying environments.
Work Environment
  • Shop may be susceptible to outdoor weather.
  • Frequent exposure to loud machinery, air tool operation, hammering and engine noise.
  • 0% travel under normal circumstances.
  • Position includes working in confined spaces.
  • Requires constant alertness and safe manner.
