Job Details

This position offers a pay range provided by NYS Department of Transportation. Your actual pay will depend on your skills and experience. The base pay range is from $48,047.00/yr to $68,630.00/yr.

Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, test, modify, adjust, overhaul, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems, electronic, magnetic devices, and computerized equipment used in traffic signal systems and ITS devices.
  • Perform quality assurance and acceptance tests; diagnose operational problems; evaluate new electronic traffic signal control equipment; certify equipment that meets standards.
  • Review, modify, and prepare documents related to the operation, design, and construction of traffic signal systems and ITS devices.
  • Respond to after-hours service and repair callouts; overtime availability is required.

Responsibilities may include supporting emergency response as part of the Incident Command System.

Minimum Qualifications

This position is part of the NY HELPS program. Candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications, which vary by level:

Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 1
  • Either 30 college semester credits including 9 in relevant fields, or
  • One year of experience assisting with traffic signal or ITS systems, or
  • Military training in electronics, or
  • Graduation from a recognized trades program, or
  • Completion of a Union Applied Skills Trades program in electricity.
Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 2
  • Either 60 college semester credits including 15 in relevant fields, or
  • Two years of related experience, or
  • Military training plus one year of experience, or
  • Trades program plus one year of experience, or
  • Union program plus one year of experience.
Traffic Systems Technician 1
  • Either 60 college credits including 15 in relevant fields plus one year of experience, or
  • Three years of related experience, or
  • Military training plus two years of experience, or
  • Trades program plus two years of experience, or
  • Union program plus two years of experience.

Progression from Trainee 1 to Trainee 2, and then to Technician, occurs after successful completion of 12 months in each level. Candidates must obtain and maintain a valid NYS Class B CDL Permit within three months and a Class B CDL license within twelve months.

Additional Requirements
  • Pass a pre-employment physical/medical exam and drug test.
  • Maintain a clean drug test record, as cannabis use is prohibited.
  • Must provide proof of citizenship or legal work authorization.

This position may be filled via non-competitive appointment under the NY HELPS program, with potential conversion to permanent competitive status. Educational credentials must be from accredited institutions, and applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.
