Job summary

The Town of Marblehead seeks part-time traffic supervisors to direct traffic at school crossings, ensuring the safety of children and smooth vehicle flow. New hires attend the annual traffic supervisor meeting at the Marblehead Police Department and are assigned permanent or alternate posts as needed.

Pay is $22.40 per hour; equipment is issued before the school year starts, with replacement gear provided as needed. Training covers duties, safety, and procedures for reporting incidents.

Responsibilities

• Report for duty at an assigned post at the time designated by the Chief of Police or designee and remain until the area is clear of children.
• Be familiar with the crossing post location, traffic pattern, school start and release times, and location characteristics for safe crossings.
• Ensure all children use proper marked crossing locations and that no children are in the streets when traffic is moving.
• When stopping traffic, confirm all vehicles have stopped before directing children across; use pedestrian walk light if available.
• Stop traffic only when it is safe to step out and clearly raise the hand-held stop sign.
• If a traffic violation occurs, gather vehicle information and forward it to dispatch; do not confront motorists.

Job description

Traffic supervisors, or school crossing guards, are part-time civilian employees responsible for directing traffic at assigned school crossings to ensure the safety of the school children, while also providing for the safe and orderly movement of vehicular traffic.

Upon successful completion of the multi-step application process, hired personnel are required to attend the annual traffic supervisor meeting before the start of the school year. The meeting is held at the Marblehead Police Department and is hosted by the Chief of Police or their designee. New employees are introduced to the specific areas of school coverage and assigned either permanent posts or as an alternate, depending on the need of the Police Department.

The annual traffic supervisor meeting is an opportunity to educate new employees of their duties and responsibilities, while also providing a refresher for current employees regardless of their service time with the Marblehead Police Department and the Town of Marblehead. Topics of the meeting include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Report for duty at an assigned post at the time designated by the Chief of Police or his/her designee (may vary depending on specific post) and remain until the area is clear of children.
2. Be familiar with the location of the crossing post, traffic pattern, school start and release times, and general characteristics of the location that will ensure the safest possible crossing.
3. Ensure that all children utilize the proper marked crossing locations and that no children are in the streets when traffic is moving.
4. When stopping traffic, confirm that all vehicles have come to a complete stop before directing children across the roadway. Traffic is to remain stopped until all children have reached a safe location. If there is a pedestrian walk light at their location, traffic supervisors are required to use it.
5. To stop traffic, ensure that it is safe to step out while clearly raising the hand-held stop sign provided.
6. If a traffic violation occurs, the traffic supervisor is to gather any vehicle information and forward it to the Marblehead Police Department dispatch center. Under no circumstances should a traffic supervisor confront a motorist regarding a traffic incident.
Before the start of the school year, new hires are issued a green, reflective traffic vest and a hand-held stop sign. Those who need replacement equipment will also be issued new gear before the first day of school. All traffic supervisors are expected to use the equipment provided. Any issues or complaints will be handled by the Chief of Police or his/her designee and will be swiftly addressed.

Providing safe passage of school children through our busy traffic corridors is one of the Marblehead Police Department's most important responsibilities. Ensuring that we have capable and caring employees covering the Town's crosswalks and school areas is a top priority.
