Job Description
General Functions

Performs complex repairs, maintenance, construction, and inspection of traffic signal systems and equipment. May work independently, using considerable judgment and initiative, under the supervision of Signal Shop staff. Performance is evaluated through conferences, observations, and results.

Representative Duties
  • Responds to traffic signal malfunctions, diagnosing problems and repairing or replacing defective components.
  • Installs detection, communication, and signal cables on overhead spans or underground conduits for traffic systems, including monitoring, wireless radio, fiber optics, and vehicle detection technologies.
  • Performs installation, identification, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of traffic signal equipment, including cabinets, signs, pedestrian signals, and warning beacons.
  • Programs electronic signal control equipment via keypad or laptop, and produces reports of statistical data and conflict monitor testing.
  • Operates hand and power tools, lifts, trucks, cranes, and other equipment, sometimes at heights up to 40 feet.
  • Completes field reports and service paperwork, documenting work details and follow-up actions.
  • Assembles or repairs signal hardware in the shop, including changing bulbs and refurbishing components.
  • Designs and builds custom cabinets and creates schematics for future use.
  • Occasionally moves, lifts, or pushes signal equipment up to 60 pounds.
  • Works outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Traffic Signal Technician I

High school diploma or equivalent, vocational training in construction, electricity, or electronics, or one year of related experience. Must pass the Technician I test at 70% within 6 months, hold a valid Florida driver’s license, and obtain/maintain IMSA Level I certification within 12 months.

Traffic Signal Technician II

High school diploma or equivalent, vocational training, and one year of electronics or traffic signal experience. Must pass written and skills tests at 70%, hold IMSA Level I and II certifications, and Work Zone Safety certification. Must be able to lift/move equipment up to 60 pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Traffic Signal Technician III

High school diploma or equivalent, vocational training, and three years of traffic signal experience. Must pass written and skills tests at 70%, hold IMSA Level I and II certifications, and Work Zone Safety certification. Must be able to lift/move equipment up to 60 pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Preferences
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuitry.
  • Basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, email).
  • Certification as Traffic Signal Inspector by IMSA.
  • Knowledge of FDOT standards and specifications.
