The City of Greensboro’s Department of Transportation seeks a motivated and safety-conscious professional to join our Traffic Operations team. As a Traffic Signal Technician, you will help ensure the safe and efficient operation of traffic signals and control systems across the city.

About the Role:

As a Traffic Signal Technician, you will participate in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signals and other traffic control devices.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Installing and maintaining traffic signal hardware (signal heads, poles, conduit, wiring)
  • Maintaining electronic control equipment, communication systems, message signs, and CCTV cameras
  • Performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and emergency repairs
  • Operating test equipment, aerial lift trucks, construction equipment, and power tools
  • Working in outdoor environments including inclement weather, high traffic areas, and around live electricity
  • Performing physically demanding tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders up to 10 feet, stooping, bending, and overhead reaching
  • This is a hands-on, safety-focused position that is essential to keeping Greensboro moving safely and efficiently.

What You Bring:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED with less than 1 year of related experience in the Traffic Signal, Electrical, Electronics, or Utility Construction industry (e.g., electrician, technician, equipment operator)
  • “OR” No High School Diploma/GED with 1 year of related experience in the Traffic Signal, Electrical, Electronics, or Utility Construction industry (e.g., electrician, technician, equipment operator)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain a NC Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement within 6 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work Zone Safety Certification (IMSA – International Municipal Signal Association)
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level 2 Certification
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License
