Job summary

City of Avondale, AZ seeks a skilled streetlight technician to perform maintenance and repair on streetlights, traffic signals, and related systems. Duties include wiring, lamp replacement, component testing, and ensuring safety standards across city streets.

Qualifications

  • IMSA Level I Roadway Lighting or Level I Traffic Signal Certification required at hire.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains streetlights including lamp, photocell, ballast, fuses and related devices.
  • Repairs and maintains traffic signals and poles; documents history of signal repairs.
  • Responds to emergencies, after-hours calls, outages, and system failures as required.
  • Maintains inventory, installation, maintenance, repair, replacement records and related work orders.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and tools; performs general maintenance and cleaning; keeps inventory of tools and supplies.
  • Monitors city streets to identify issues and initiates corrective action.
  • Diagnoses and coordinates issues related to controller programming per engineering specs.
  • Assist operations of signs and markings and routine preventative maintenance on signals and streetlights.

Performs skilled/semi-skilled work associated with streetlight operation, repair, and maintenance duties; performs related work as required.

Performs skilled/semi-skilled work associated with streetlight operation, repair, and maintenance duties; performs related work as required.

Essential Functions

Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains streetlights including lamp, photocell, ballast, fuses, and related devices. Rewires ballasts and light poles, locates power sources to streetlights, and installs street light wiring systems.

Repairs and maintains traffic signals and poles as needed. Maintains new signals & City Center Project installations. Documents history of signal repairs for record keeping.

May respond to emergencies, after-hours calls, outages, and system failures as required.

Maintains inventory, installation, maintenance, repair, replacement records, and related work order records.

Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, power, and hand tools related to this position. Performs general maintenance and cleaning on equipment, machinery, and tools. Keeps inventory of tools, materials, and supplies. Ensures adequate inventory of materials.

Monitors City streets to identify downed poles, inoperative lights, needed repairs, or other situations requiring attention; initiates corrective action.

Diagnose and coordinates issues related to controller programming per engineering’s timing and programming specs.

Responsible for locating utility traffic signals and fiber optics/blue stake.

Assist the operations of the signs and markings job duties as needed.

Performs routine preventative maintenance on traffic signals and streetlights.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A High School diploma or GED equivalent is required.

Two (2) years of maintaining, installing, and/or repairing streetlights.

Must possess an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I Roadway Lighting or Level I Traffic Signal Certification at time of hire.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered if sufficient to perform the essential duties of the role as listed herein.

Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License at the time of hire.

Supplemental Information

Work requires the ability to read work orders.

Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Work requires the ability to write work orders and reports.

Normal tasks require the use of definite procedures, with little deviation. Work requires limited analysis. Knowledge of Cobalt Safetran System Controller preferred.

The incumbents in this position contact others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City, such as the Streets Division and Engineering, which may be involved in decision-making or providing approval or decision-making authority for purchases or projects. In addition, these incumbents work with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required of the employee. Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, supplies, or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, brokers, and sales representatives. The employee must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems.
