Job Title: Traffic Signal Technician

Safety/Security Sensitive Designation: This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment.
- Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially team members), and ensure regular and reliable attendance.
- Perform construction and installation of new traffic signals, including laying conduit, drilling, erecting poles and arms, signal pole footings, installing wiring, wiring poles and cabinets, setting pull boxes, and assembling components.
- Maintain and repair existing signals and signal equipment such as camera detection systems, inductive loops and detectors, radio systems, railroad pre-emption, fire/optical pre-emption, signal wiring, controllers, and conflict monitors.
- Install and maintain battery backups for uninterrupted power supplies.
- Install and maintain street lighting and overhead roadway lighting.
- Install and maintain Thermo-Plastic pavement markings, including crosswalks, speed table markings, and striping.
- Place traffic counters for traffic counts and speed studies used in traffic engineering analyses.
- Operate heavy equipment such as trenchers, backhoes, loaders, forklifts, bucket trucks, and crane trucks.
- Fabricate and install signs for traffic control as needed.
- Set up safety work zones in accordance with IMSA guidelines when working near vehicular traffic.
- Manage inventory and assist in ordering supplies.
- Install signage in accordance with subdivision plats, traffic manuals, and for 911 locations, street markers, and regulatory signs.
- Perform vegetation removal to ensure sight distance and clear signage visibility.
- Prioritize public safety needs effectively.
- Serve in an on-call capacity as assigned to respond to after-hours service needs.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned, including secondary duties.
- Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED, two years of related experience, and a valid driver’s license.
- Must obtain IMSA Certifications in Work Zone Safety, Signs and Markings I, Traffic Signal I, and Traffic Signal II within two years of hire.
- Receive training from Urban Forestry Staff on proper tree cutting techniques.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Proficiency in equipment used for sign installation and maintenance, as well as sign design and fabrication software.
- Ability to learn and operate equipment such as hydraulic post drivers, core drills, acetylene cutters, plotters, pneumatic sheeting applicators, and various hand and power tools.
- Proficient in computer and office software, and capable of operating standard office equipment.
- Ability to operate equipment such as bucket trucks, crane trucks, electronic sign equipment, forklifts, and hydraulic tools.
- Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, handle objects, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift weights up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Must have color vision and other visual abilities necessary for electrical and electronic work.
- Work environment includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, weather conditions, electrical shocks, and vibrations.
