The City of Oxnard’s Police Department is seeking Traffic Service Assistants with strong technical and customer service skills to be part of the team. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and be able to understand, read and properly interpret applicable laws, rules and regulations related to the assignment.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
  • Support the Patrol Division
  • Control Traffic
  • Respond to and assist with traffic collision investigations
  • Assist with traffic checkpoints and prepare citations, warnings, and collision diagrams
  • Prepare and maintain records, reports, logs, correspondence, and other documentation
Payroll/Classification Title:

Public Safety Field Technician

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This classification is distinguished from the Public Safety Field Assistant in that it provides assistance to sworn officers in controlling traffic and issuing citations, processing accident scenes and enforcing parking regulations.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The normal work week hours are 4/10, hours and days may vary. This position may be required to be available to work additional hours and/or weekends as needed to respond to workload needs, attend special events, etc. This position is eligible for overtime pay.

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.

  • Provides assistance and law enforcement support to sworn officers in the performance of service duties related to traffic control, parking enforcement and accident investigations.
  • Assists with various traffic enforcement activities including directing, controlling and routing vehicle traffic using traffic signal/barrier equipment; enforcing parking regulations and assessing need for towing of vehicles; responding to traffic collision calls for service and Investigating collisions; assisting with traffic checkpoints; preparing and issuing citations, warnings and collision scene diagrams.
  • Adheres to and ensures compliance with applicable regulations, policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
  • Prepares, issues, processes and/or maintains files, records, logs, correspondence and documentation.
  • Uses and maintains assigned communication devices and equipment in clean and safe working condition.
  • Responds to information requests, inquiries and complaints; refers complex requests to appropriate resources.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

The following are the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

EDUCATION:
  • High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE:
  • One year of additional training through college coursework or Oxnard Police Department experience OR
  • One year of related experience
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing
  • Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred
UNION MEMBERSHIP:

Regular full-time and part-time positions in this classification are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

NOTE:

For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools. Candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with ongoing work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position requires a 12-month probationary period. Internal applicant probationary periods will be governed by the applicable MOU.

Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
