Job summary

The State of Missouri's MoDOT is seeking a traffic intern to support reviews of roadway access, traffic handling, and excavation proposals on department right of way. The role includes field inspections, permit preparation, and collaboration with contractors and local entities to ensure compliance with permits.

Selected candidates gain exposure to traffic engineering tasks, plan reviews, and reports for department and public meetings while pursuing an ABET-accredited program.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program; for engineering candidates, ABET-accredited.
• GPA of 2.0 or higher out of 4.0 required.
• Must have completed at least 30 credit hours.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparing and issuing permits for work on department right of way.
• Explain procedures and policies to contractors and other entities.
• Review construction plans for drainage, sight distance, landscaping, and traffic flow; suggest modifications.
• Review work zone requests and assess impact on traffic and community.
• Conduct field inspections and measure traffic control devices for compliance.
• Prepare reports and correspondence for meetings.
• Submit proposals to supervisor or Traffic Division for review.
• Assist with access, utility, and traffic-related issues.
• Assist traffic engineer with striping layouts, studies, and lighting requests.
• Review or escort over-dimension loads on state routes.
• Perform other responsibilities as required.
