The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 2 to join the Olympic Region’s Traffic Office. The top candidate will be responsible for operational reviews primarily in Maintenance Areas 1 & 3; however, they may work on reviews and/or projects in other areas. They are responsible for analyzing and improving traffic operations in the region, working on projects that directly impact road safety and efficiency. This role involves troubleshooting issues raised by citizens, analyzing traffic patterns, and implementing strategies to reduce crash rates while ensuring compliance with national and departmental standards.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Traffic Operations Review Engineer will:

  • Conduct operational reviews primarily for Maintenance Areas 1 and 3, focusing on citizen concerns and requests.
  • Analyze problematic locations, such as intersections and road sections, and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Perform analysis including determining channelization and signal warrants, signing and delineation needs, pavement markings, speed studies, intersection revisions, and crash pattern studies.
  • Manage and oversee special studies including ball banking, no pass zone inventory, sign inventory, and roadway delineation programs.
  • Review signing needs within Maintenance Areas, design traffic signs, and collaborate with regional sign crews to implement plans.
  • Travel to project sites using a state vehicle to perform on-site field reviews of existing conditions; assess the implementation of project requirements to ensure conformance with project specifications, standards, and regulations. Identify any issues or deviations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices on all projects (Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASPs) and other safety documentation).
  • Perform quality reviews of other design teams' plans, specifications, estimates, design calculations, and supporting project documentation.

Field work includes onsite review and inspection of existing conditions, as well as those provided in the course of construction. This work is performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather; requires traversing rough, steep, and uneven terrain.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, one of the following are required:

  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training or Certification from a Community or Technical College Program in Civil Engineering Technology AND one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.

OR

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.

OR

  • A Master’s degree with major study in civil engineering, traffic, transportation, or a closely related field.

In addition to one of the above, the following are also required:

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Maintain a valid traffic control flagging card within six (6) months of hire.
  • Maintain First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of hire.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate (EIT)
  • Two (2) years of traffic engineering experience with any combination of the following:
    • Freeway Operations
    • Traffic Operations
    • Traffic Design
    • Work Zone Traffic Control
    • Traffic Analysis
    • Safety Analysis

  • Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis. Travel is typically to perform site/field visits, attend an off-site meeting, meet with stakeholders, or attend training. Overnight travel may be required in order to attend training opportunities or related work objectives.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
