  • Bachelor's degree in engineering; 4 years experience in transportation engineering (full‑time or part‑time equivalent).
  • One (1) year supervisory/managerial experience required. Project lead may substitute for supervision.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and be able to operate a state vehicle.
  • Professional Engineer license; engineers licensed in other states must comply with TX licensing requirements within 6 months of hire.

  • Advise staff engineers.
  • Assist in development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts.
  • Direct construction operations including review of shop drawings and letting advertising.
  • Travel to project locations for on-site reviews and support.
  • Oversee traffic engineering studies for high accident locations and signal timings.
  • Participate in district plan review activities.
  • Prepare correspondence and reports.
  • Develop and implement innovative programs and designs.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Job description

Supervises personnel engaged in transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and/or bridge inspection. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials, private entities and/or contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties
  • Advises staff engineers.
  • Assists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the district.
  • Directs construction operations to include review of shop drawings, compliance with regulations and approval of letting advertising.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
  • Interprets the Utility Accommodation Policy; reviews utility billing documents.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Oversees and/or performs traffic engineering studies to recommend solutions for high accident locations, to warrant traffic signals and speed zones and to determine capacity and channelization of the highways.
  • Participates in district plan review activities.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of innovative programs, projects, designs, concepts and solutions.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science; bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

  • 4 years experience in transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or pro‑rated part‑time equivalent). Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.
  • Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (*).
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
