Traffic Engineer (Transportation Engineer III)

The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Traffic and Safety (OOTS) is recruiting for a Traffic Engineer (Transportation Engineer III) in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone meeting the minimum and selective qualifications. The resulting list of candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or similar roles. You must reapply for future openings.

Nature of Work:

This position acts as an intermediate-level Transportation Engineer on the Traffic Engineering Research and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Team within the Traffic Development and Support Division. Responsibilities include:

  • Serving as project engineer for research projects by OOTS
  • Interpreting the Maryland Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MdMUTCD)
  • Developing and distributing OOTS policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Responding to citizens' inquiries on behalf of officials
  • Coordinating traffic safety and operational issues across SHA offices
  • Representing OOTS/SHA at meetings with FHWA, TRB, ITE, and other organizations

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Two (2) years of professional engineering experience

Selective Qualification: At least one (1) year of experience involving transportation research or traffic analysis related to highway planning and design.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of MUTCD, Highway Safety Manual, and relevant policies and standards
  • Proficiency with traffic engineering software
  • Experience in transportation research and crash analysis
  • Effective communication and customer service skills
Additional Notes:
  • Related work experience can substitute education on a year-for-year basis
  • Master's degree can substitute for one year of experience
  • Current Maryland Professional Engineers or equivalent are considered to meet education requirements
Licenses & Certifications:
  • Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license
