State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Traffic and Safety (OOTS)is currently recruitingfor aTraffic Engineer (Transportation Engineer III)in Anne Arundel County. Nature of Work:This position serves as an intermediate-level Transportation Engineer on the Traffic Engineering Research and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Team within the Traffic Development and Support Division. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to: serving as the project engineer for research projects conducted by the Office of Traffic and Safety (OOTS); technical expert for the interpretation of the Maryland Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MdMUTCD) and developing and distributing OOTS policies, procedures, and guidelines; assisting with customer service by preparing response letters to citizens on behalf of the Governor, Secretary, and Administrator; assistant coordinator for traffic safety and operational issues across multiple SHA offices; and representative of OOTS or SHA as an expert at meetings with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Transportation Research Board (TRB), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and other reginal organizations.

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in professional engineering.

Selective Qualification:One (1) year of the required experience must have involved transportation research and/or traffic analysis of highway planning and design projects.

Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability).

Preferred Qualification:
The ideal candidate should possess the following:

• Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), the Highway Safety Manual, and other federal or state transportation engineering policies, standards, guidelines, or practices
• Knowledge of various traffic engineering software
• Experience in transportation engineering research and in various transportation engineering/crash analysis addressing or recommending transportation operation and/or safety concerns

• Effective oral and written communication skills and good customer service skills

Notes:
1. Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
2. Possession of a master's degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
3. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.
