Job summary

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) seeks a Traffic Engineer to support the Office of Engineering and Construction in Baltimore, MD. You will review traffic studies, design traffic-related elements, and assist with MOT, signing, and pavement marking, in line with state and federal standards, with potential hybrid telework.

Position Overview

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities across Maryland, including bridges, tunnels, and turnpikes. The Traffic Engineer supports the Office of Engineering and Construction by performing traffic engineering duties associated with planning, design, construction, and operation. The incumbent will review and conduct traffic studies, design traffic-related elements, and support OEC’s Traffic Discipline. This position is located in Baltimore, MD at the Francis Scott Key Bridge facility and may offer hybrid telework schedules.

Responsibilities
  • Review and perform traffic design elements of highway construction projects, including Maintenance of Traffic, Signing and Pavement Marking, and other Traffic Control Devices in accordance with the Maryland Manual on Uniform Traffic Control and other relevant state and federal standards, specifications, guidelines, and regulations.
  • Conduct and/or review various traffic engineering studies.
  • Manage crash history records, perform safety studies, and address requests for data records.
  • Manage traffic volume and classification data collection and reporting efforts; perform highway capacity analysis and traffic engineering studies.
  • Assist in the development of new, and/or enhancements to existing geographic information system (GIS) based tools related to traffic data and assets.
  • Respond to stakeholder requests, as well as urgent and emergency events.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Possession of an Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate in the State of Maryland. Evidence of certificate must be presented at the time of appointment.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing engineering work acceptable to the Maryland State Board for Professional Engineers, involving specialized engineering analysis and design. One (1) year of experience performing planning, analysis, and/or design activities related to traffic engineering.

Selective Qualification: One (1) year of experience performing planning, analysis, and/or design activities relating to traffic engineering. No substitutions are allowed for this selective qualification.

Applicants may substitute additional graduate-level education in engineering for the required experience on a year-to-year basis.

Licenses & Certifications
  1. Applicants may substitute an EIT Certificate from a state with comparable requirements acceptable to the Maryland State Board for Professional Engineers. Evidence of certification must be presented at the time of appointment.
  2. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a comparable state, are considered to have met the minimum qualifications. Evidence of license must be presented at the time of appointment.
  3. Applicants must possess a valid Driver’s License in the State of Maryland. List your license number and expiration date on the application.
