This position is responsible for preparing and supporting travel demand forecasts and technical analyses for complex planning, design, and construction projects across the State Highway Administration, other MDOT agencies, and local partners. The role applies traffic engineering principles, simulation tools, and forecasting methods to assess existing and future conditions; performs operational and safety analyses; assists with consultant task management; and conducts field observations as needed.
Duties include developing and reviewing traffic analysis models, technical reports and memos, coordinating project schedules and activities with internal and external stakeholders, and representing the division in meetings and public forums. The traffic engineer reviews traffic impact studies, prepares traffic forecasts and title sheet data for design offices, evaluates maintenance of traffic plans, and requests and validates traffic and crash data.
The traffic engineer supports updates to division procedures, reference materials, and online content, and contributes to agency initiatives, including the Maryland Mobility Report, Congestion Management Studies, the Attainment Report, the Consolidated Transportation Program, the Connected and Automated Vehicle efforts, the Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, and related mobility and safety programs.
