Job summary

The City of Olathe is seeking a skilled traffic engineering professional to support multimodal transportation citywide. This role may be filled at Traffic Engineer or Senior Traffic Engineer level based on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities include evaluating transportation issues, conducting studies, reviewing plans, and coordinating with internal and external partners to advance mobility and safety initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with transportation emphasis.
• 5–7 years of civil engineering experience, with emphasis in traffic engineering.
• PTOE certification preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Kansas or ability to obtain within 1 year.

Responsibilities

• Review plans, development plans, permits, and temporary traffic control plans for compliance with applicable standards and practices.
• Conduct and manage traffic engineering studies, including crash analyses, speed studies, pedestrian crossing reviews, sight-distance evaluations, and traffic calming investigations.
• Prepare technical reports with findings and recommendations related to traffic operations, safety, and multimodal mobility.
• Support or lead road safety audits, annual traffic safety reporting, and implementation activities of the Safety Action Plan.
• Manage assigned traffic engineering projects, including scope, schedule, budget tracking, and consultant coordination.
• Coordinate with schools, Johnson County, KDOT, consultants, developers, contractors, and other partners to advance project goals.
• Lead senior-level programs, provide technical guidance, and ensure quality of work.

This position may be filled at the Traffic Engineer or Senior Traffic Engineer level, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, and ability to perform the work.This role performs professional traffic engineering work related to traffic operations, safety, development review, project delivery, and coordination with internal and external partners.
