Job summary

HDR New England Transportation Group is seeking a Traffic Engineer to work on transportation and safety design projects throughout New England and be based in our Boston Office.

The primary duties include producing intersection layout and complete streets practices, pavement marking and signing, maintenance of traffic plans, traffic signal design plans and specifications, Traffic Impact Studies and design study reports, and safety analyses.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and PE license required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform traffic engineering analysis and design including modeling, signal design, and safety analyses.
  • Prepare traffic signal design plans, signing/striping plans, maintenance of traffic plans and PS&E packages.
  • Conduct crash analyses and safety studies as part of transportation assessments.
  • Perform operational traffic analysis using modeling tools and apply results to engineering practice.
  • Write traffic impact and transportation assessment reports and present findings to the team.
  • Lead traffic engineering tasks and coordinate with other disciplines.

HDR New England Transportation Group is seeking to hire a Traffic Engineer to work on various transportation and safety design projects throughout New England and be based in our Boston Office.

The Traffic Engineer’s primary duties will include producing intersection layout and complete streets practices, pavement marking and signing, maintenance of traffic plans, traffic signal design plans and specifications, Traffic Impact Studies and design study reports, and safety analyses for transportation projects throughout New England. We’re seeking someone who enjoys collaborating with a team and will help enhance the group’s technical performance. This person will play an active role in assisting our transportation team in working with state and municipal agencies throughout New England and mentoring younger staff members and helping them develop their engineering skills while providing encouragement and motivation.

Primary Responsibilities

In the position of Traffic Engineer, we’ll count on you to:

  • Perform traffic engineering analysis and design consisting of traffic modeling and analysis, traffic signal design, traffic safety analyses, signing and striping design, safety planning and analysis for strategic highway safety plan development
  • Assist with the preparation of traffic signal design plans, signing and striping plans, maintenance of traffic plans and PS&E packages, and work with the roadway design team to evaluate to evaluate traffic systems and recommend solutions.
  • Perform crash analysis and safety studies as part of more extensive transportation assessments.
  • Conduct operational traffic analysis using various modeling tools, ranging from highway capacity software to complex micro-simulation models, and apply results to sound engineering practice; analyze everything from isolated intersections and roundabouts to urban arterials and freeway segments.
  • Write traffic impact and transportation assessment reports to communicate analysis results and recommendations clearly and present findings to the team.
  • Perform detailed checks and quality control reviews of design work performed by other design team members.
  • Perform as traffic engineering task leader, coordinating with other disciplines.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in adaptive signalization, transit signal design, and ITS, is a plus
  • Knowledge and experience with New England transportation agency, Complete Streets, NACTO, FHWA, and AASHTO policies and procedures
  • Experience in the design of traffic control Tactics, systems management, communications, ITS systems and sequencing plans is a plus
  • Experience using PTV Vissim, GuideSign, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office is a plus
  • Preference is given to Local candidates
  • PTOE Certification is a plus
  • RSP Certification is a plus
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience with traffic analysis and traffic engineering/design
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Detailed hands on experience conducting traffic design using CAD platforms including MicroStation, Autocad and Guide Sign software
  • Detailed hands on experience conducting operational analysis using a variety of analysis and modeling tools specific to support job duties, including HCS, Synchro, VISSIM, and Aimsun
  • Detailed hands on experience conducting safety analysis using a variety of safety software tools including Highway Safety Software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word
  • Strong verbal and written skills

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.)

  • {Rocky Hill, CT}: $85,316 – $121,880
