Job description

Position Overview

This position plans, supervises, and coordinates a wide variety of maintenance, repairs, and special projects within the Charleston County Facilities Department, under the direction of the Trades Technician Supervisor. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the repair, installation, and maintenance of HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, painting, and carpentry. The role also involves administrative duties such as managing work orders via a computer-based system, project management, procurement, and supporting building occupants in the supervisor’s absence. The position requires after-hours on-call support on a rotating weekly schedule.

Hiring Details

Salary Range: $50,440 - $66,060 (Estimated Annual Salary)

Key Duties
  • Ensure repairs, replacements, and preventive maintenance of heating/air conditioning equipment and components.
  • Maintain HVAC coils as recommended by manufacturers.
  • Monitor and adjust HVAC system temperatures using BMS software.
  • Repair and replace hot water heaters, faucets, water lines, and unclog drains, toilets, and sinks.
  • Perform electrical repairs, including fixtures, devices, and ballast/bulb replacements.
  • Ensure operational testing of electrical, HVAC, mechanical, wastewater, potable water, plumbing, and life safety systems.
  • Complete carpentry tasks such as lock repairs, drywall repairs, and painting.
  • Maintain a safe environment within the facility.
  • Document all work orders accurately, including labor and materials, and ensure timely completion.
  • Coordinate with other facility shops and contractors for efficient issue resolution.
  • Communicate work status to supervisors or managers.
  • Work within the County’s procurement procedures and serve as a liaison between building occupants, the public, and the Facilities Department.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical school diploma or Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in the commercial building trade.
  • At least five years in a building maintenance environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • References required.
  • Valid SC driver’s license and ability to pass SLED criminal background check.
Additional Requirements
  • Availability for 24/7 on-call support and various shifts.
  • Willingness to work during declared County emergencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Willingness to work in a Detention Center environment.
