Job summary

Wytheville Community College is seeking a part-time Trades Technician II to assist in groundskeeping, basic building maintenance, and setup for events. The role requires operating grounds equipment and delivering customer service to students and staff in a collaborative campus environment.

The candidate should have a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Virginia driver’s license, and the ability to work independently while prioritizing multiple tasks in a changing schedule.

Qualifications

  • Ability to operate tractors, mowers, trucks, forklifts, and snowplows; and
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple assignments, and respond to changing operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • The Groundskeeper will : assist in the care of grounds including mowing, trimming trees and shrubs, and snow/ice removal; Assist in the moving furniture for office and classroom changes and setups for special events, classes, and workshops;
  • Assist with basic building maintenance to include preventative maintenance, installations, light bulb changes and other building maintenance;
  • Obtain and maintain training in CPR, First Aid, and AED;
  • Complete all training required by WCC;
  • Practice regular and dependable attendance and punctuality;
  • Practice good teamwork among co-workers;
  • Display initiative and work efficiency;
  • Be observant and report conditions that may be detrimental to the college;
  • Participate in scheduled staff/safety meetings; and
  • Provide excellent customer service to students, staff, faculty, administration and the public. Schedule will primarily be working Tuesday through Friday.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school education or equivalent;
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License;
  • Working knowledge of basic trades;
  • Ability to operate tractors, mowers, trucks, forklifts, and snowplows; and
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple assignments, and respond to changing operational needs.
Additional Considerations
  • Previous experience in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and painting repairs.
  • Experience operating grounds and maintenance equipment, including tractors, zero-turn mowers, skid steers, forklifts, utility vehicles, and snow removal equipment.
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance inspections and minor repairs on facilities and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and OSHA safety requirements.
  • Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED, or the ability to obtain within six months of employment.
  • Experience working in a higher education, government, school, commercial, or institutional environment.
  • Experience using work order systems.
