Job description

Job Summary:

Responsible for performing journeyman level work as a Carpenter and semi-skilled work in painting and masonry. Will assist in carrying out projects, and may supervise and instruct lower grade incumbents as needed; will read blueprints and maintain new and existing equipment. Must have basic knowledge of all hand and shop tools associated with the carpentry trade. Specific duties include:

  1. Perform journeyman level carpentry including construction and repair of walls, ceilings, floors, doors, cabinetry, counters, and shelving.
  2. Includes roofing, millwork, furniture construction, repair, and cabinetwork.
  3. Make small repairs to furniture, windows, screens, and picture frames.
  4. Installation of metal doors and frames and adjust doors and hardware including locks (mortise and cylindrical), door closures, door knobs, hinges, door checks, sash fittings.
  5. Install metal framing, sheetrock, and all types of ceilings, including suspended, acoustical, and aluminum pan using proper methods and techniques of trade.
  6. Install floors and baseboards (VCT); install cabinets and countertops using proper anchoring methods.
  7. Prepare surfaces for painting using appropriate methods and tools, including cracks or joints.
  8. Make minor repairs to sheetrock and plaster walls; prime and apply paint to walls using appropriate techniques.
  9. Must demonstrate knowledge of math used in the carpentry trade, demonstrating working knowledge of carpentry techniques; supervise and train.
  10. Must be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting.
  11. Must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver's license.
Minimum Qualifications:

Four years of full-time experience in the Carpentry trade under a skilled journeyman which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in the carpentry trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. Must possess 2 years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work in related trades of Masonry & Painting under the supervision of a skilled tradesman or completion of an appropriate 2-year technical school course.
