Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Corporation is seeking a Heavy Products Trader/Senior Trader to join our Supply, Trading, and Origination (ST&O) team in Texas. The role focuses on negotiating, pricing, and logistics for Vacuum Gasoil, Fuel Oil, and Slurry, with exposure to profit/loss responsibilities and performance metrics.

The successful candidate will work with Traders, Schedulers, Refinery teams, and Finance to maximize margins while maintaining safe operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required for Trader/Senior Trader.
• Experience in Trading/Marketing with P&L responsibility.
• Knowledge of scheduling (rail, truck, vessel, pipe) is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop negotiating tactics and arrange purchases/sales of Heavy Products.
• Ensure feedstocks meet technical and refining parameters.
• Interact with Traders, Schedulers, Accountants, Engineers, Analysts and more to inform decisions.
• Evaluate and execute discretionary trade and development opportunities beyond core business.
• Manage exposure and inventory to maximize value within constraints.
• Represent the company at industry functions and maintain industry contacts.

Position Summary

Heavy Products Trading is part of Supply, Trading, and Origination (ST&O) a cross-functional organization that purchases/sells, plans, transports, and accounts for Heavy Products including Vacuum Gasoil, Fuel Oil and Slurry. Heavy Products Traders interface externally to negotiate pricing and terms for the purchase and sale of various streams as dictated by refinery economics, refinery operations, market conditions, and logistics to maximize economic margin consistent with safe refinery supply chain operations and other MPC core values. This trading position is a role for a highly motivated individual that has a strong aptitude and a keen interest for a commercial career. Ideal candidates should possess a strong financial acumen and interpersonal skills. This role will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to gain an understanding of the Heavy Products supply & trading business, while performing a complex and critical function.

Key Responsibilities

• Develops and implements negotiating tactics and arranging the purchase and sale of Heavy Products as dictated by refinery economics, market conditions and logistical requirements.
• Ensures purchased and transferred intermediate feedstocks meet technical and refining parameters.
• Interacting with Traders, Schedulers, Refinery Feedstock Coordinators, Accountants, Engineers, Analysts, Legal and other personnel in Commercial, Refining, Marketing, Product Quality, Transport & Logistics, Business Development, IT and Finance & Commercial Services and elsewhere. These interactions will be required to stay abreast of trading, logistical and financial activity, prepare contracts, address information queries, initiate, recommend, develop, and implement existing and new acquisition or sales strategies for achieving optimum value added from Heavy Products purchases, sales, and logistics.
• Evaluates and executes discretionary trade and business development opportunities beyond the core business (storage, blending, freight deals).
• Manages basis commodity exposure and/or physical inventory position to maximize market structure value within operational constraints in collaboration with Refining, Scheduling, and Finance groups within assigned area.
• Representing the Company at industry functions and keeping abreast of evolving industry conditions by training, reading, building, and maintaining internal and external contacts related to Heavy Products trading.
• Maintains and communicates relevant commodity pricing database for internal use on a daily basis.

Education and Experience

• Trader: Bachelor’s degree required Three (3) or more years of experience in Trading or Marketing including profit/loss responsibility for Product Trading, Contract Negotiation and Scheduling (rail, truck, vessel and pipe).
• Senior Trader: Bachelor’s degree required Five (5) or more years of experience in Trading or Marketing including profit/loss responsibility for Product Trading, Contract Negotiation and Scheduling (rail, truck, vessel and pipe).
