POSITION OVERVIEW

If you’re eager to learn and grow in a dynamic industry, join JGM as our next Welder/Fitter/Fabricator! In this entry-level role, you'll be a key part of our fabrication team, gaining hands-on experience in the steel industry while developing essential skills. You'll work in a positive, motivated environment with growth potential. Reporting to the Fabrication Supervisor, this position focuses on the precise fitting and welding of structural steel assemblies and is primarily task driven.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Read and interpret prepared shop drawings and measurements.
  2. Layout, fit & weld parts per drawings and specifications. Check layout accuracy for other fabricators.
  3. Back gouge using air carbon arc equipment.
  4. Pre-heat and prepare steel as required to ensure the highest quality standard.
  5. Material handled manually or by utilizing various jacks & overhead cranes.
  6. Set up & operate hand and power tools such as magnetic drills, grinders, cutting torches and automated welding tractors as they relate to job needs.
  7. Inspect & correct welds as needed to meet product specifications.
  8. Inspect, maintain, and anticipate equipment functionality; communicate issues in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Previous experience fitting & welding or a serious desire to learn the craft of fitting & welding.
  2. Familiar with a variety of welding processes: FCAW, SAW, GMAW, and/or GTAW.
  3. Able to pass AWS D.1.1 3G weld test using FCAW.
  4. Structural steel or metal fabrication experience highly preferred.
  5. Ability to deal in a systematic and patient way with factual and technical information and processes.
  6. Must be disciplined, conscientious, and like to work with your hands.
  7. Derive satisfaction from getting work “done right” the first time.
  8. Safety focused, driver and champion of shop safety initiatives.
  9. High School Diploma, or GED highly preferred.
  10. Training or certification through a technical or trade school is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to assemble, connect, weld, or attach parts. The employee is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands.
  2. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds properly. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
  3. Climb stepladders and extension ladders and stairs and work from a raised platform.
  4. Operate tools properly and safely.
  5. Operate high reaches, scissor lifts, fork-trucks, cranes, if properly trained.
  6. Pass pulmonary tests to wear a respirator.
  7. Employee may be required to properly maintain drills, welding equipment, saws, ladders, levels, wrenches, hammers, safety equipment, all tools in the requirements list, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Shop employees perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy objects. Work may take place outdoors in all weather conditions and can involve exposure to fumes, odors, loud noise, hazardous materials, or dangerous machinery. Some tasks may require working in confined spaces with substances like lead-based paint or asbestos.

To ensure safety, workers wear protective gear such as gloves, hardhats, chemical suits, and eye, respiratory, or hearing protection. Awareness and caution are essential to identifying and managing workplace hazards.
