Description

The Track Laborer position involves inspecting, repairing, and maintaining railroad track infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient service. It is a manual labor role requiring proficiency in various skills, duties, and requirements during a prescribed training period.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect, load, unload, and install track materials, including cross ties, switch ties, and ballast.
  • Inspect, grind, and transpose rail.
  • Construct, maintain, and repair turnouts and other track components.
  • Patrol, construct, and shift track as needed.
  • Maintain and repair road crossings, bridges, culverts, tunnels, and station facilities.
  • Test and maintain scales; install and maintain fences and signs.
  • Perform vegetation control and debris removal.
  • Respond to emergencies promptly and report accurately.
  • Read and interpret safety rules, manuals, and regulations.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively.
  • Acquire understanding of track authority and adhere to performance metrics.
  • Practice safety and follow policies and procedures.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED, or 3-6 months related experience; or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Valid driver’s license with no restrictions.
  • Ability to pass required safety and training tests, including Track Ground School, GCOR, and others as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Legible handwriting.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Flexible work schedule.
  • Ability to recognize problems and understand railroad safety rules.
  • Broad understanding of railroad operations.
