Join our dynamic team of experienced track laborers who have been dedicated to building and maintaining tracks for Union Pacific for over 150 years! As a Track Laborer - Driver Eligible, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains, serving customers across North America.

Required Certifications

During your probationary period, you will be required to obtain certification as a Union Pacific driver. To be eligible, you must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:

  1. Minimum age of 21 years.
  2. Possession of a valid driver's license.
  3. Maintaining an acceptable driving record as per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  4. Obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if operating vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or greater. You will need to acquire your CDL during the probationary period if applicable.
Medical Requirements

You must meet the medical requirements (physical qualifications) for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The final determination on medical qualifications will be made by Union Pacific's Health and Medical Services, which may include additional requirements to ensure safe job performance.

Accountabilities
  • Handle, help unload, and move track materials and equipment from rail cars, carts, or trucks.
  • Remove and replace rails, rail anchors, spikes, ballast, ties, and other parts as needed.
  • Work with equipment; dig holes and trenches, etc.
  • Observe the condition of the tracks (including beds and right-of-way) for problems or defects.
  • Follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, safety regulations, and FRA guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and customers, resolving issues effectively.
  • Drive company vehicles as needed.
  • Maintain track beds by cutting vegetation and brush, and sweeping, picking, or digging dust or snow from track parts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Required
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • Conduct regular inspections of tracks, track beds, and right-of-way for issues or defects.
  • Replace and repair rails, rail anchors, spikes, ballast, ties, and other components.
  • Assist in unloading, moving, and handling track materials and equipment, including digging.
  • Maintain track beds by clearing vegetation, snow, and dust.
  • Adhere to safety rules, practices, and procedures.
  • Operate company vehicles as required.
  • Perform track maintenance, repairs, and installations.
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad safety standards and FRA guidelines.
  • Build positive relationships with colleagues and resolve issues effectively.

Qualifications - Preferred
  • Valid CDL - Class A or B.
  • Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Welding skills or certification.
  • Experience operating heavy machinery.
  • Familiarity with construction environments.
  • At least one year of Railroad Maintenance of Way experience.
  • Flexibility for on-call, overtime, and various shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Physical and Mental Job Requirements
  • Pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT) before employment.
  • Engage in physically demanding tasks, including bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Lift and carry up to 65 lbs., push/pull up to 119 lbs.
  • Stand for extended periods, with periodic position changes.
  • Walk safely on uneven surfaces.
  • Climb ladders as needed.
Work Conditions
  • Legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.
  • Willing to wear PPE including glasses, boots, hard hats, and hearing protection.
  • Willing to live and work in specified locations.
  • Work around heavy machinery and in rural/remote areas.
  • Commitment to safety and following protocols.
  • Frequent travel required.
  • Reliable personal transportation needed.
