Job description

Overview

Oversees construction, maintenance and repairs of track; supervising and directing other gang members with a "safety first" focus.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees employees in performance of work and provides guidance in resolution of routine problems.
  • Builds, repairs, and maintains track.
  • Familiarizes employees with established organization procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Direct and instruct operator of equipment assigned to the gang, instruct employees under his supervision in the safe performance of work and see that they comply with all applicable rules and instructions.
  • Assigns and checks work of designated staff.
  • Establish line of communication interdepartmentally to ensure maximum work windows and corporate objectives are met.
  • Sees that all tools, equipment, materials, and supplies are safely stored and properly used.
  • Utilize and maintain assigned equipment in accordance with instructions.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records of daily tasks, payroll, and production reports, accident and injury reports, personnel reports, and all other required records.
  • Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examinations.
  • Random testing for drugs and/or alcohol.
  • This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement, membership is required.
  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.
  • Strict compliance with FEC Safety Policies.
  • Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses.
  • Depending on section, travel is required.
  • Other duties or tasks as assigned by manager.
Qualifications

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk, hear or smell.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • Must successfully complete probationary period.
  • Must pass all required assessments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have in his/her possession, at all times while doing so, a valid driver’s license and valid credentials required by federal and state laws, including CDL Class B.
  • Will be required to operate railway highway motor vehicles.
  • Must have standard railroad watch.
  • Be familiar with and understand FRA Track Safety Standards Part 213 Subpart A to G as published by the Federal Railroad Administration; must have A & B qualifications.
  • Must have at least one year of responsible supervisory experience in track maintenance in Class 4 or higher.
  • Must be capable of operating all FEC Maintenance of Way vehicles in its fleet regardless of transmission configuration and must qualify and secure motor car maintainer permit.
  • Upon employment, new hire must successfully complete and pass all FEC Rules Classes: Safety, Operating, and Roadway Worker. Must complete all requirements to obtain FRA A & B certifications and pass test within 30 days.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
