Job summary

The Town of Brookline is seeking a qualified attorney to serve as Town Counsel, supervising the law department and advising the Select Board and town departments on municipal and litigation matters.

Ideal candidates will have a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, at least five years of municipal law and general litigation experience, andCurrent MA Bar admission with eligibility for federal court admission within 90 days of appointment.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school.
• Five years of experience in municipal law and general litigation.
• Massachusetts Bar membership required; must be admitted to the US District Court and the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Plans, directs and supervises all of the Town's legal affairs and activities of the Town's law department.
• Provides legal opinions on urgent and everyday questions for Town officials.
• Researches and writes formal legal opinions for Town officials, boards and commissions.
• Investigates and evaluates claims against the Town and negotiates settlements as needed.
• Represents the Town in trials, hearings and appellate proceedings at multiple courts.
• Drafts and reviews contracts, legislation, policies and other legal documents.
• Provides general counsel services to all Town departments and elected officials.
• Maintains knowledge of developments in municipal law and participates in continued education.
