Job description

Mold Designer

Summary of Job: This position requires a high level of understanding of how plastic injection molds function and operate. Ability to design plastic injection molds.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Mold Design: Create 3D CAD models of injection molds based on TSG Mold Standards and part specifications, considering factors like draft angles, gate locations, and cooling channels.
2. Analyze part design for manufacturability and identify potential molding issues.
3. Design mold components like cavity, core, slides, and ejector plates, ensuring proper fit and function.
4. Design the necessary electrodes for EDM process.
5. Generate 2D drawings for mold fabrication.
6. Interpret plastic simulation results.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Experience: Minimum 3 years as Injection Mold Designer.

Required Education: High school diploma or GED or equivalent work experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Proficient in SolidWorks 3D CAD software.
• Understanding of plastic injection molding principles, including material properties, gate design, and cooling systems.
• Collaborate with engineers, mold makers, and quality personnel to meet project requirements.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication skills for effective teamwork.
• Ability to work independently and in a team with minimal supervision.
• Attention to detail for precise mold design.
• Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
• Proficient in shop mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry.
• Proficient in basic computer operations, email, and Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Skills:

• Plastic Injection Simulation: Use SolidWorks Plastics to perform mold flow analysis for fill, venting, and warping.
• CNC Programming: Use CamWorks to generate CNC toolpaths, select tools, optimize machining, and simulate programs to prevent errors.
