This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers You will share in the team's impact on all aspects of Tooling Engineering to support manufacturing, assembly, test, and transportation for various spaceflight systems. You will be responsible for or contribute to the entire lifecycle or tooling development. This will include concepting, design, build, procurement, commissioning, and troubleshooting of tooling, equipment, and fixtures.

This is a role that requires you to be a hands-on, highly collaborative, and energetic individual who always welcomes a challenge. You are motivated to do or learn whatever is necessary to achieve our goals while maintaining the high standards essential for safe aerospace manufacturing.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop high-quality production, development, test, integration, and manufacturing tooling for the New Glenn business unit.
  • Utilize concepts and principles of mechanical design and analysis of several projects in a fast-paced environment -- projects will vary in size, scale, and complexity.
  • Ability to interpret and apply sound design and drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) when creating drawings
  • Handle a wide range of technical design challenges related to many types of machining and assembly fixtures, material handlers, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental equipment, integration equipment, and custom machines.
  • Close collaboration with product team to achieve the best possible cradle-to-grave metrics (safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, and maintenance/refurbishment)
  • Participate in all aspect of tooling lifecycle including concepting, design, analysis. project management, vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, proof testing, and commissioning of custom tooling.
  • Set, implement, and maintain schedules to ensure project completion.
  • Facilitate effective and collaborative communication by fostering creativity and using team member strengths.
  • The ability to work in a team environment is a must. All designs are the collective effort of the team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Engineering degree (B.S.) in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • 2+ years of work or project experience with design, build, and commissioning of tooling and fixtures for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
  • Experience with developing high quality production, development, and test tooling including assembly fixtures, material handlers, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental equipment, integration equipment, and custom machines.
  • Capable of integrating concepts and principles of mechanical design and analysis of several different projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to interpret and apply sound design and drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) in creating tooling drawing definitions
  • Experience collaborating with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and the manufacturing facility to achieve the best possible cradle to grave metrics (safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, and maintenance/refurbishment)
  • Ability to contribute to project aspects including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, and commissioning of tooling
  • Experience using CAD and FEA-based analysis software (Creo and ANSYS Workbench preferred) for structural applications.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with structural analysis in addition to the ability to perform hand calculations
  • Strong expertise in design for manufacturability and design for assembly including experience taking products from development design to rate production
  • Work experience in or exposure to aerospace manufacturing environments
  • Hands-on experience with prototype manufacturing/assembly, tool installation, and troubleshooting
  • Solid understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis
  • Solid understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines including mills, lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting/rigging, assembly, inspection, etc.
  • Experience with custom machine design: motors, actuators, linear rails/actuators, pneumatics, bearings, etc.
  • Experience with ProE/Creo and Windchill CAD/PDM systems
  • Experience with ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, NX Advance Simulation, ProE Simulate/Mechanica, etc.

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $96,310.00-$134,833.65
