Job summary

Frey Consulting Group seeks a hands-on Tooling Engineer for our manufacturing and cold forming operations in St. Joe, Indiana. You will design tooling, dies, and fixtures, and collaborate with operators and production teams to improve tooling life, efficiency, and part quality on the floor.

The ideal candidate will have strong CAD capabilities and a genuine interest in working within a manufacturing environment, with practical manufacturing instincts and CAD skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • At least two years of experience using 3D design software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem‑solving ability.
  • Ability and willingness to work directly within a manufacturing and production environment.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to translate engineering concepts into practical manufacturing solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop tooling, dies, fixtures, part progressions, and manufacturing processes.
  • Create detailed tooling and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD.
  • Partner directly with operators, toolmakers, and production personnel to resolve tooling and manufacturing issues.
  • Improve tool life, production rates, process efficiency, reliability, and finished-part quality.
  • Support new product introductions, tooling development, and process implementation.
  • Investigate production problems, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with forming, tooling, wire-processing, engineering, and production teams.
  • Provide hands‑on engineering support on the manufacturing floor.
  • Maintain accurate tooling drawings, process documentation, and engineering records.
  • Promote safe work practices and support continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Tooling Engineer – Manufacturing & Cold Forming
Location: St. Joe, Indiana
Schedule: First Shift, Monday–Friday
Compensation: $90,000-105,000 in total compensation annually, plus a 15-20% profit sharing bonus
Position Overview

A Fortune 150 steel manufacturer is seeking a hands-on Tooling Engineer to design and improve tooling, dies, fixtures, part progressions, and manufacturing processes used in fastener production.

This is not a desk-only engineering position. The Tooling Engineer will work directly with operators, toolmakers, and production teams to troubleshoot manufacturing problems and develop practical solutions that improve tooling life, production efficiency, process reliability, and product quality.

The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, solid CAD capabilities, and a genuine interest in working within the manufacturing environment. Candidates who combine practical manufacturing instincts with effective CAD skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Knowledge of nut‑and‑bolt cold‑forming principles.
  • Experience troubleshooting tooling or production issues on the manufacturing floor.
  • Familiarity with root‑cause analysis and continuous‑improvement methods.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Base salary of $80,000–$90,000.
  • Additional 10%–15% ROA performance bonus.
