Position Overview

A Fortune 150 steel manufacturer is seeking a hands-on Tooling Engineer to design and improve tooling, dies, fixtures, part progressions, and manufacturing processes used in fastener production.

This is not a desk-only engineering position. The Tooling Engineer will work directly with operators, toolmakers, and production teams to troubleshoot manufacturing problems and develop practical solutions that improve tooling life, production efficiency, process reliability, and product quality.

The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, solid CAD capabilities, and a genuine interest in working within the manufacturing environment. Candidates who combine practical manufacturing instincts with effective CAD skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop tooling, dies, fixtures, part progressions, and manufacturing processes.
  • Create detailed tooling and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD.
  • Partner directly with operators, toolmakers, and production personnel to resolve tooling and manufacturing issues.
  • Improve tool life, production rates, process efficiency, reliability, and finished-part quality.
  • Support new product introductions, tooling development, and process implementation.
  • Investigate production problems, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with forming, tooling, wire-processing, engineering, and production teams.
  • Provide hands‑on engineering support on the manufacturing floor.
  • Maintain accurate tooling drawings, process documentation, and engineering records.
  • Promote safe work practices and support continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • At least two years of experience using 3D design software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem‑solving ability.
  • Ability and willingness to work directly within a manufacturing and production environment.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to translate engineering concepts into practical manufacturing solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in tooling engineering, tool design, mechanical design, manufacturing engineering, or process engineering.
  • Hands‑on experience with tooling, dies, fixtures, or metal‑forming processes.
  • Knowledge of nut‑and‑bolt cold‑forming principles.
  • Experience troubleshooting tooling or production issues on the manufacturing floor.
  • Familiarity with root‑cause analysis and continuous‑improvement methods.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary of $80,000–$90,000.
  • Additional 10%–15% ROA performance bonus.
  • Profit‑sharing bonus.
  • Medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) and Roth retirement options.
  • Paid parental leave.

  • Employee stock program.
  • Additional performance‑based compensation and benefits.

Why Join?

This opportunity offers the stability and resources of an established industrial manufacturer while allowing engineers to make a visible impact on the production floor. You will collaborate closely with skilled operators and toolmakers, solve meaningful manufacturing challenges, and contribute directly to improvements in safety, quality, tooling performance, and production efficiency.
