Job summary

Sdmsconnect is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer in Romulus, MI to optimize tooling and manufacturing processes. You will resolve tooling issues, drive cost savings, manage tooling budgets, and coordinate with plant teams to maintain safety and quality.

A bachelor's in mechanical engineering and 5 years' production machining experience are preferred. Responsibilities include tool trials, drawings updates, PFEP usage, and continuous improvement reporting, with involvement across cross-functional

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • 5 years in production machining or related manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Strong math, problem solving, and blueprint reading abilities.
  • Ability to read schematics and mechanical drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Act as single point of contact to resolve tooling problems in manufacturing.
  • Coordinate with plant to resolve safety, quality, throughput, or cost issues.
  • Generate cost savings ideas to reduce tool and manufacturing costs.
  • Manage weekly tooling spend against a variable cost budget.
  • Perform and document tool trials following customer procedures.
  • Revise and update tool drawings and documentation as required.
  • Develop systems to recondition and reuse tooling where feasible.
  • Attend operations and problem-solving meetings.
  • Help team resolve machining and tooling-related costs and scrap issues.
  • Support cross-functional teams to meet plant metrics.
  • Recommend optimized machining processes and cutting parameters.
  • Introduce new technology and tooling designs.
  • Provide year-over-year cost per piece reduction plans.
  • Coordinate with preset team on proper tool setup techniques.
  • Maintain PFEP and use data to initiate savings projects.
  • Complete cost savings and tool test documentation.
  • Report non-conformances, CARs, and continuous improvements.
  • Maintain safety and housekeeping standards.
  • Make decisions within general standards or procedures.
  • Report near misses to site manager and cooperate with investigations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the single point of contact to resolve tool-related problems in manufacturing
  • Coordinate with the plant to resolve safety, quality, throughput, or cost issues related to tooling
  • Generate and implement cost savings ideas to reduce tool and manufacturing costs
  • Manage weekly tooling spend against a variable piece cost budget
  • Perform and document tool trials and adhere to customer tool test procedures
  • Revise and update tool drawings and documentation as required
  • Develop new systems to recondition and re-use tooling when economically feasible
  • Attend regularly scheduled operations and team problem-solving meetings
  • Assist team in resolving machining and tooling-related issues relating to costs, scrap rates, and low production rates
  • Support cross-functional teams to achieve overall plant metrics
  • Recommend optimized machining processes and cutting parameters
  • Introduce new technology and improved tooling designs
  • Provide year-over-year cost per Piece reduction plans
  • Coordinate with the preset team on proper tool setup techniques
  • Maintain PFEP and use PFEP and Top Spend Data to initiate savings projects
  • Complete required cost savings and tool test documentation
  • Report and document non-conformances, CARs, and continuous improvements
  • Maintain safety and good housekeeping standards for the site
  • Make decisions within the limits of general standards or procedures
  • Report near misses and incidents to the site manager and cooperate with investigations
  • Other duties as assigned
  • 5 years of experience working in production machining, a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or experience working in a closely related technical field is preferred
  • Prior experience designing and tooling parts in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong math and problem-solving skills and ability to read blueprints and schematics
  • Proficiency with computers
  • Able to work with little to no supervision and ability to multitask
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills, computer and system knowledge
