The Tool Room Machinist will perform responsibilities with minimal instruction, designing, building, or modifying jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies for R & L Spring Company in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Ideal candidates have experience with manual and CNC machining, blueprints, and CAD/CAM/EDM tools, plus precision measurement skills.

• Sets up and tests tooling to ensure products meet specifications.

The Tool Room Machinist will perform responsibilities with minimal instruction and supervision, designs, builds, or modifies jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies. Assists other departments in design, and repairs of equipment in a cost-effective manner. Assembles and tries out complex tools and dies and performs other related duties as assigned.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Builds or repairs Assembly and Machine Shop tools, jigs, fixtures, and dies, using machining operations and measuring instruments.
• Reads and interprets blueprints, or works from verbal or written instructions, or from the part to be copied or fitted.
• Plans the setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools, considering types of materials, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants, and machine tool feeds and speeds.
• Sharpen cutting tools.
• Supports Assembly Departments and embraces process improvement through tooling and automation.
• Determines specifications for inspection of work using precision measuring and gaging tools, during, and after machining.
• Performs hand operations involved in producing jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies using hand tools of the trade.
• Understanding of CNC machine technology for tool making.
• Coordinates with leads, supervisors, and other manufacturing resources, and assists with problem solving techniques.
• Fits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies.
• Sets up, and tests jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies to ensure product is to specifications, and adjusts as necessary.
• Assists maintenance department with equipment overhaul by making or repairing parts.
• Manufactures R&D parts for engineering department and provides feedback.
• Regular punctuality, attendance, and absence reporting in conformance with company policies is essential to the successful performance of this position; and
• Fully comply with company rules, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure safe and effective operations
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Understand and follow applicable IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 standards and continuous improvements as it relates to this position.
• Participate in training and /or education to update skills and knowledge of technology advancements as it relates to this position

Required Skills/Abilities

• Must have considerable knowledge and understanding of machine practices and the mechanics involved, and of measuring techniques.
• Ability to produce drawings for machine tooling, test fixtures and assembly jigs.
• Familiar with a variety of concepts, practices, and procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing or verbally with management, supervisors, and co-workers.
• Ability to operate computer to access, edit and maintain company documentation and files, as required for assigned position and/or job at hand.
• Must be able to read, understand and interpret technical data.
• Experience in manual and CNC machining using mills, lathes, surface grinders, etc.
• Experience in EDM set up and operation.
• Experience in CAD/CAM to support tool design and building.
• Training and/or experience building fixtures, jigs, and gages.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Proven experience as machinist
• Knowledge of the properties of metal and other material
• Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals
• Good at math with analytical abilities
• Completion of vocational training or an apprenticeship will be an asset

Physical Requirements

• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
