Job SummaryTracks personal and company tools, checks tools in and out, stocks shelves, maintains inventory, logs, and issues safety items. Performs simple repair of leads and tools. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
Qualification StandardsMust have one to two years of work experience in tool rooms or warehouses. Experience in tool rooms, warehouses, or shipyard trades as a machinist or other related trades is desirable. Must have knowledge of calibrated instruments, tools, and supplies used in ship repair, warehousing, and inventory procedures. Must have basic computer data entry skills, the ability to maintain records with accuracy, and deal with people in stressful situations. Must be able to use basic math and speak and write in English. Must be able to plan, organize, and sort tools. Must be able to move through cluttered work spaces on board ships with repair equipment. Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.
Essential Job Tasks- Issue, receive, and maintain hand tools, equipment, and materials for yard-wide inventory.
- Check equipment for safe operation and perform minor repairs on hand tools, hoses, and leads.
- Maintain daily tool room inventories on a computer.
- Process tools of new hires and lay-offs, order tools and supplies (through automated computer inventories) to maintain inventory.
- Stock shelves with tools, parts, and supplies.
- Maintain accurate computer records of tool issuances and returns, including back supports, complete loss and scrap reports, refunds, and other paperwork.
- Set up connex boxes.
- Other tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade.
Materials, Tools, Equipment, Work AidsVarious ship repair tools, equipment, and materials, common hand tools, ladders, computers, report forms, calculators, notebooks, writing instruments, and shipbuilding repair materials and supplies. Connex boxes, tools, and supplies. Personal protective equipment required.
Physical/Mental InvolvementWorks in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships requiring repetitive or prolonged walking, climbing, standing, balancing, handling, feeling, reaching, bending, stooping/crouching, kneeling, seeing, hearing, and manual and finger dexterity. Must be able to regularly lift/carry tools and supplies up to 60 lbs. unassisted. Requires the ability to read, print, and speak simple English sentences, follow written directions on forms and computers, complete paperwork with accuracy, and interact with company workers. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, read and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present in an employee's work area.
Marginal Job TasksPerform housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety, quality, and/or process improvement meetings as required.
Environmental FactorsThe majority of the time, works inside warehouses or connex boxes; may work on board ships. Exposed to wind, cold, heat, and wet conditions. Exposure to electrical shocks, fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to moving machines and mechanical parts and high noise levels, particularly in pier tool rooms.
Pay Scale$25.20 - $28.55
This pay range is an estimate of the hourly rate for this role, considering factors like skill, experience, and education.
