SUMMARY

To build and/or repair all types, sizes, and shapes of jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies. Assemble and try out complex tools and dies on manufacturing equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Plan and perform bench and machine operations necessary to construct, adjust, and repair a variety of tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges with very complicated designs and very close tolerances.
  2. Sets up and operates tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, and grinders to machine parts and verifies conformance of machine parts to specifications.
  3. Fits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies. Sets up runs off and tests dies to produce a product to specifications, tracing die difficulties to their source and correcting them.
  4. Visualize the finished job, make necessary mathematical calculations, and select allowances for spring, lapping, grinding, fitting, and finishing.
  5. Reads and interprets routine blueprints or works from verbal or written instructions for the part.
  6. Uses hand tools of the trade.
  7. Perform difficult and exacting machine operations requiring a variety of setups and methods to maintain close tolerances.
  8. Make tool tryouts, detect faulty operation or defective material, and correct trouble.
  9. Under general supervision.
  10. Each employee is responsible for helping attain the objectives stated in the EMS Policy and Quality Policy through sound judgment and environmental responsibility.
  11. May be trained as an internal auditor for the ISO 9001/IATF16949 and ISO 14001 Systems.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist in the training of Tool Room Apprentices.
  2. May assist Punch Press or Fourslide setup persons in Fourslide or Punch Press overhaul.
  3. May work with tool designers to provide input to manufacturing capability on newly formed parts.

QUALIFICATIONS

It requires high precision and control in work where damage could be high, and muscular control and delicate touch are required. A high degree of attention and care is required to prevent injury to self and others when operating machine tools. A good attendance record is required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or completion of in-company, four-year training program to the satisfaction of program requirements (hours, school, etc.) or equivalent outside work experience of four (4) plus years of Tool & Die work in the Metal Industry.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS

  1. Accuracy and detail orientations.
  2. Dexterity and preciseness required to operate gauges and miscellaneous equipment.
  3. Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and other required documents.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form required. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and fellow employees.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

High mental and vision effort is required. Frequent contact with machine oils and possible sharp edges of parts and/or materials. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Position involves frequent lifting of up to 30 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
