Job description

Summary

Designs, lays out and constructs tools, molds and dies by performing the following duties.

REQUIRED: 10 to 15 years experience in machining or model making, with increasingly complex assignments including design of tools, dies or molds.

Technical school training in machining and tooling.

What You'll Do

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Designs a wide variety of tools, molds, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges where only tentative design concepts are available from engineers. Visualizes completed items to ensure ease of operation and maintenance in a manufacturing setting.
  2. Performs development work and difficult tool room machine operations.
  3. Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations.
  4. Constructs, alters, and repairs tools, molds, and dies to very close tolerances. Heat treats tools or parts.
  5. Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances.
  6. Performs skilled fitting, timing, and adjusting.
  7. Makes tool tryouts; diagnoses and corrects problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Knowledge of trigonometry and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to visualize completed product and diagnose problems and develop solutions.
