Job Description

Location Profile:

Headquartered in Irvine, CA, Shur-Lok manufactures fastening systems with superior locking devices for critical applications including engine modules, structural assemblies, rotor blade attachments, and aircraft engine shafts and spindles. Operations include CNC Machining, CNC Waterjet Cutting, Laser Marking, Heat Treating, NDT, and EDM.

Position Summary:

The Tool and Die Maker designs, builds, and troubleshoots new dies and tooling, and sets up and maintains all types of dies used in fastener production.

Responsibilities include operating various machine tools, laying out, fitting, assembling parts, constructing tools without existing designs, and working to exact tolerances.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Design and fabricate production machining tooling, fixtures, jigs, dies, molds, and other tools based on specifications.
  • Make specialized tools such as drill jigs, fixtures, and dies, including those with complex contours and multiple plates.
  • Set up and operate machine tools (lathe, mill, grinder, etc.) for tooling fabrication.
  • Develop cost-effective tooling solutions for urgent or one-time jobs.
  • Construct and assemble components from blueprints, sketches, or manuals, and create prototype machinery as needed.
  • Verify alignment and tolerances with measuring instruments, and test machine assemblies for functionality.
  • Assemble, set up, and operate machines to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Form and install piping, fixtures, and attachments for machine servicing.
  • Perform setups independently according to blueprints, including compound and progressive dies for presses.
  • Adjust operations for material variations, such as hardness or gauge differences.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including PPE use and reporting hazards.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in die design and toolmaking.
  • Ability to plan and interpret tooling designs and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of tooling steels, metals, and heat treatment effects.
  • Proficiency with manual and CNC machinery for precision parts.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, and sampling.
  • Physical capability to use hand tools and lift weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience in manufacturing and machine shops.
  • Mathematical skills including geometry, trigonometry, and practical application of fractions and ratios.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and symbols accurately.
  • Competence in visual and dimensional inspection tools and techniques.
  • Attention to workmanship quality, identifying defects like cracks or scratches.
  • Effective communication skills for team collaboration.

The pay range for this role is $25.50 to $38.25 USD hourly, depending on factors. Participation in bonus, paid time off, holidays, insurance, and 401(k) plans are available.
