Job summary

Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. is seeking a Tool and Die Lead in Columbus, OH to safely maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on progressive dies. You will lead toolmakers, schedule work, coach team members, and coordinate tooling with vendors.

The shift runs Monday through Thursday from 4:00 pm to 2:30 am with overtime as needed. You will oversee die setup, maintenance, and cross-training, drive continuous improvement, and ensure safety and OSHA compliance across

Qualifications

  • Associates degree or equivalent from a two-year college.
  • 3–4 years related experience and/or training.
  • Ability to read blueprints and tolerances.
  • Experience with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges).

Responsibilities

  • Perform die changeovers, preventative maintenance, and inspection of dies.
  • Lead and mentor toolmakers and technicians; set goals and provide feedback.
  • Oversee setup, repair, and operation of progressive dies.
  • Coordinate with vendors and manage tooling inventory.
  • Ensure safety procedures and OSHA requirements are followed.

You will also oversee the day-to-day activities of toolmakers and tool technicians by scheduling work, coaching and mentoring team members, and identifying training opportunities to strengthen the skills within the department.This position is scheduled to work Monday thru Thursday from 4:00 pm – 2:30 am with overtime as needed.**WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING**(% of Time)Perform die changeovers in and out of the shop, preventative maintenance, cleaning, inspections, reconstruction and restoration of dies. (40%)Lead, motivate, and direct employees by establishing clear expectations and goals, providing feedback and recognition, and addressing performance issues. Coach and develop employees based on their strengths and areas for growth. Delegate responsibilities, promote accountability, and encourage regular feedback. Foster teamwork and collaboration within the department and across the organization. (20%)Oversee the setup, repair, modification, maintenance and operation of progressive dies (10%)Responsible for cross-training, teaching, and coaching team members to work productively both independently and as part of a team. Review daily and weekly goals with technicians and ensure timely communication with direct reports, peers and management through one-on-ones, huddles, meetings, and end-of-shift pass-downs, etc. (10%)Review, prioritization and execution of daily operations. Coordinate and administer daily interaction between the assigned area of responsibility, across shifts and all other plant departments. (10%)Coordinate ordering of tool room supplies, as needed. (5%)Coordinate tooling work with outside vendors and oversee inventory levels of spare tooling and die components in collaboration with the MRO attendant. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too:* Associates Degree (A.A) or equivalent from a two-year college* 3-4 Years related experience and/or training* Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to tooling dimensions, tolerances and measurements* Knowledge of Elimination of waste, Continuous Improvement, 5S, Kaizen & Kanban.* Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small-group settings.* Ability to accurately use precision measurement tools, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, dial indicators and gauge blocks, to inspect and verify tooling dimensions and tolerances.* Ability to actively listen, understand information, ask appropriate questions and communicate effectively without interrupting.* Ability to understand and follow written, verbal, and visual instructions. Identify and evaluate solutions to manufacturing problems and use logic and critical thinking to determine the best approach.* Understand and ensure the Tool and Die team follows all safety procedures while supporting OSHA rules and requirements.* Ability to operate various computer programs, including but not limited to Spreadsheets, AutoCAD, Smartsheet and Maintenance Connection, for parts stocking, die component ordering, report creation, CAD drawing review, work order management and timekeeping.* Ability to read and understand part drawings (blueprints) and stay current with drawing revisions and updates.**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT**The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Noise level is loud.
