Job Description:

The Tool and Die Maker I works from blueprints and sketches to create or modify prototypes, tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and molds. Assists with the building and repairs of custom machine shop tools using machining equipment and measuring instruments. Tool and Die Maker I’s operate lathes, grinders, milling, and boring machines to produce tools. Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures, regulations, and processes and identifies opportunities for improvement.

Responsibilities:

  1. Ability to select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and material on machines such as grinders, mills, lathes, and shapers.
  2. Read blueprints, sketches, and drawings to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, the sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  3. Visualize finished products and communicate potential design errors or issues.
  4. Dismantle defective tooling and diagnose repair needs.
  5. Install new or rebuilt parts and reassemble machines via trial run to verify the accuracy of machine settings.
