Job summary

Elgen Staffing is seeking an experienced Tool & Die Maker for a precision metals manufacturer in York. The role involves assembly, repair and fabrication of close tolerance tool components for progressive dies, and interpreting blueprints to ensure proper dimensions and tolerances.

You will use micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and other QA tools; set up dies in presses, achieve first-piece samples to print, and maintain Die Logs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship or 5+ years of experience in tool & die.
  • Familiarity with concepts, practices, and procedures in the field.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, set-up and maintenance instructions.
  • Proficiency with measuring devices like micrometers and calipers.
  • Blueprint reading with geometric tolerances.
  • Ability to read die assemblies and change-overs from various sources.
  • Strong mechanical problem-solving aptitude.
  • Ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammed instructions.
  • Willingness to work extended hours including nights/weekends if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, repair and assemble dies and/or machine tools into sub-units or complete units.
  • Manufacture tooling to print tolerances.
  • Use QA practices and metrology tools to ensure tooling conforms to specs.
  • Fit tooling and check alignment of cutting stations.
  • Set up die in press and produce first piece sample to print.
  • Record and store die tooling as fabricated.
  • Consult manager on tool modifications from print; document changes.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Record die maintenance in Die Log Book promptly.

Job description

Our client, a precision metals manufacturer, has an immediate need for an experienced Tool & Die Maker, to join their winning team in York.

Our candidate of choice will be responsible for the assembly, repair and fabrication of close tolerance tool components for progressive dies along with interpreting blueprints and design sketches to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product.

Key Responsibilities
  • Fabricate, repair and assemble dies and/or machine tools into sub-units or complete units.
  • Manufacture tooling to print tolerances.
  • Utilize quality assurance practices and metrology equipment to ensure that tooling conforms to applicable design specifications.
  • Fit tooling and perform alignment check on die to ensure design specifications and correct alignment of cutting stations.
  • Set-up die in press and produce an acceptable first piece sample to customer print.
  • Record and store die tooling in an efficient manner as they are fabricated.
  • Consult manager if any tooling may need to be modified from print and record modification.
  • Utilize good housekeeping practices to maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Record die maintenance and preventive maintenance in Die Log Book, in a timely and accurate manner.
Key Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have completed an apprenticeship or have at least 5 years of experience in the field.
  • Familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform basic math functions using whole numbers, fractions and decimals including metric /English conversion. A basic understanding of algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, set-up, operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Knowledge of measuring equipment usage, such as micrometer, caliper and optical comparator.
  • Blueprint reading with geometric tolerances.
  • Ability to read die assemblies, change-over and detail prints from various sources.
  • Capable of writing routine correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to solve practical and mechanical problems (Mechanical aptitude).
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must have the ability to successfully complete all training requirements as listed on training matrix for this position.
  • Must be available for scheduled work: normal work day of 8 hours or more as necessary, night shift and weekend work is possible.
