Description

Under the direction of the Department Manager, the primary purpose of the Tool & Die Maker position is to support and assist production through building and maintaining new and existing production tooling and fixtures. The Tool & Die Maker will act in a manner that is consistent with Gordon Aluminum’s Customer 1st Philosophy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Program and operate CNC and manual equipment to efficiently machine and fabricate new production fixtures. Must be proficient with 3 axis mills, manual lathes, 3 axis surface grinders, bench grinders, hand tools, heat treatment furnaces and other equipment to effectively and efficiently build fixtures and tooling.
  • Ability to read and evaluate blue prints, including the use and understating of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance. A basic understanding of hydraulic and electrical schematics is encouraged. Must be able to effectively and professionally relay concerns and design changes to designers and engineers.
  • Ability to produce quality fixtures and tooling that meet print expectations and tolerances. Thoughtfully chooses the best manufacturing processes to ensure finished product meet the defined expectations of the print.
  • Strong understanding of production machining techniques and processes. Directly applies this knowledge to ensure fixtures are built with production quality and process capability in mind.
  • Must possess strong problems solving skills with the ability to trouble shoot problems and identify potential solutions.
  • Adequate mechanical aptitude to complete the following tasks. Plumb pneumatic or hydraulic fixtures, assemble or disassemble dies, troubles shoot and repair equipment made by GAI staff and support maintenance staff as needed through manufacturing components or parts on request.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of the department’s equipment and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Takes initiative, promptly seeking his or her next task, requiring minimal supervision

  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding safety and standards of workplace behavior, in completing job duties and assignments

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or equivalent. Requires a minimum of six months on-the-job training. Technical degree in tool and die making preferred.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

Wear required safety equipment when on the shop floor. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; walk; use hands or fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to sit or stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Regularly work near moving mechanical parts. Occasional extreme heat.
