Job summary

Dentsply Sirona is seeking a Tool and Die Maintenance Mechanic to support production and continuous improvement projects. You will maintain dies, fixtures, and precision tooling, while ensuring quality, cost efficiency, and regulatory conformance.

Responsibilities include setting up shop equipment, performing preventive maintenance, and supporting engineering with tooling modifications. Strong reading of drawings, GD&T, and GMP knowledge are essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED OR equivalent work experience.
• Journeyman Tool and Die/ maintenance mechanic apprenticeship preferred.
• 1–5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience performing Die Maintenance Practices including inspecting, repairing, and maintaining precision tooling such as progressive stamping dies and forming dies.
• Knowledge of GMP and ability to hold tight tolerances.

The Tool and Die Maintenance Mechanic will support production, product service and continuous improvement projects to achieve organizational objectives in areas of quality, cost reduction and production goals. The role will be responsible for maintaining high levels of manufacturing and product quality, and with the aid of engineering, design new fixtures, modify existing fixtures, and repair current fixtures, as well as ensuring cost-efficiency and conformance with all regulatory standards.

General

• Support of Operations through standard Die Maintenance Practices such as inspecting, repairing, and maintaining precision tooling such as progressive stamping dies and forming dies or working with external resources to provide these services.
• Support of Operations through the development of, or improvement of, a maintenance program for the dies and fixtures. (Program to include maintenance schedule, identifying necessary spares and drawer organization)
• Maintains equipment, dies, and fixtures by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; and reporting of problems and repairs.
• Manage tooling spares and inventory including assessing tooling wear on fixtures and dies and facilitate the ordering of spares.
• Support of Operations including modification and or creation of tooling, machine components, and / or fixtures.
• Understand and follow instructions and standard procedures such as WI’s, QSR, ISO, SOPs, work, and OSHA safety rules.
• Interface with Engineering, Department Supervisors, Quality Team, Coworkers, and Senior Management.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance plans & activities.
• Perform quality & running efficiency improvements to the dies.
• Support of the engineering group in short / long term projects.
• Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
• Sets-up general manual machine shop equipment and associated, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, stops; indicating and work holding devices, as well as tramming the milling head when required.
• Verifies machine setups by measuring positions and product, first-run part, and sample workpieces; adhering to international standards.
• Maintains drawing or sketch specifications when drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
• Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
• Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
• Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
• Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
• All other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to stand/sit for at least 4 hours at a time.
• Have normal eye/hand motor coordination and the ability to grasp and hold small objects.
• Must be able to climb stairs.
• Must be able to climb ladders.
• Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, twist, reach with hands and arms several times a shift.
• Possess a normal extended reach.
• Must be able to use all tooling equipment to complete tasks.
• Consistently uses manual dexterity.
• Have the ability to determine color acuity.
• Must be able to lift and transport materials, product and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. while wearing steel tip work shoes or toe protection when doing so.

Education

• High School Diploma/GED OR equivalent work experience at the discretion of the Hiring Manager
• Certificate for Journeyman Tool and Die/ Maintenance Mechanic apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience.

Years And Type Of Experience

• 1 - 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.

Key Required Skills, Knowledge And Capabilities

• Experience performing Die Maintenance Practices such as inspecting, repairing, and maintaining precision tooling such as progressive stamping dies and forming dies.
• Experience with Tooling and adjusting Speeds and Feeds on shop equipment
• Experience developing machining strategy and selecting tooling and work holding solutions.
• Perform basic arithmetic computations (i.e., add, subtract, multiply, and divide, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals)
• Knowledge of GMP
• Ability to hold +/-.0002” tolerances. Strong understanding of tooling and product drawings and geometric tolerance interpretation
• Ability to read, write, understand and speak English
• Follow all established health and safety policies.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a team.
• Ability to work overtime if needed. Dependability and ability to adapt to change are essential.
• Proficient in use of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators and optical comparators/ vision measuring equipment.
