The role requires broad toolmaking knowledge, a 4-year apprenticeship, and 5+ years of experience. You will interpret drawings, plan material needs, and perform maintenance and installations across tooling projects.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Broad knowledge of toolmaking, machining methods, metals/plastics, shop practices.
  • Ability to read drawings and perform advanced geometry calculations.
  • Equivalent to a 4-year apprenticeship in tool, die and gauge making.
  • 5+ years of experience.
  • Internal priority for Pratt & Whitney IAM Bargaining Unit members.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret drawings and plan material requirements; estimate jobs and schedules.
  • Install, maintain and repair tooling; perform preventive maintenance.
  • Instruct others in tool use, care, and safety practices.
  • Develop efficient tool utilization to resolve production bottlenecks; service equipment.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, vendors on new tooling or equipment installations.
  • Support other trades on joint projects and cross-skill opportunities.
  • Escalate issues to supervisor; may train to obtain licenses and certifications.

Job Overview

At Pratt & Whitney, the world’s leading manufacturer of aircraft engines and auxiliary power systems invites qualified candidates to join our team and plan and perform the fabrication work necessary to conceive, develop, construct, alter, and repair a wide variety of tools, dies, and gauges.

Responsibilities
  • Under general direction of supervisor interpret broad instructions and drawings to plane and layout material requirements; determine sequences of project phases, prepare control tapes in appropriate machine language, estimate jobs and other required support services to meet changing schedules and priorities; follow up to verify project is completed on time and meets required specifications.
  • Perform installations, maintenance and repair work on tooling; conduct preventive maintenance and service required.
  • Instruct others in job requirements, care, use and maintenance of tools and equipment and safe work practices.
  • Develop unique ways to more effectively utilize tools and equipment to resolve ongoing or unusual problems that cause production bottlenecks; monitor and service equipment to ensure product integrity.
  • Work on special assignments with supervisors, engineers, vendors or other trade groups and customers to review and prepare for new tooling or equipment installations; commend service requirements and check out operations to specification requirements.
  • Perform similar duties throughout the facility within the scope and skill level of the job description; assist other trades working on joint projects where common skill crossover provides opportunity for shared responsibilities and effective use of available skills.
  • Refer difficulties to leader/supervisor; may be required to train for obtaining and maintaining licenses, operator permits and certifications within assigned trade specialization.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Broad knowledge of toolmaking, including machining methods, cutting qualities of metals and plastics, machine shop practices, shop metallurgy and plating.
  • Ability to work from complicated drawings and sketches and make calculations involving advanced shop mathematics, including geometry; use a variety of precision measuring instruments and equipment.
  • Equivalent to a 4-year apprenticeship in tool, die and gauge making.
  • 5+ years of experience.
  • Priority consideration for internal (and recall) Pratt & Whitney IAM Bargaining Unit members of District Lodge 26 and affiliated locals 700 and 1746 (Connecticut Operations).
