Job summary

RTX is hiring a skilled Toolmaker to plan, fabricate, alter and repair a wide variety of tools, dies and gauges in Middletown, CT. You will work under supervision to interpret drawings, prepare material layouts, and ensure on-time delivery with quality standards.

Minimum 5+ years in toolmaking required; broad knowledge of machining methods, shop metallurgy and precision measurement. On-site role with competitive benefits and opportunities to advance within a leading aerospace provider.

Qualifications

• Broad knowledge of toolmaking including machining methods and materials.
• Experience reading complex drawings and performing advanced shop math.
• 4-year apprenticeship in tool, die and gauge making or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Plan and layout material requirements from drawings.
• Estimate jobs and support services to meet schedules.
• Install, maintain and repair tooling and perform preventive maintenance.
• Instruct others in tool handling, safety and best practices.
• Collaborate with engineers and vendors on new tooling installations.
• Ensure equipment and tooling meet specifications and quality standards.
• Support production to resolve tooling-related bottlenecks.
• Review projects with supervisors and other trades as needed.

FUNCTION:

PLAN AND PERFORM THE FABRICATION WORK NECESSARY TO CONCEIVE, DEVELOP, CONSTRUCT, ALTER AND REPAIR A WIDE VARIETY OF TOOLS, DIES AND GAGES. WORK ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS TO INVESTIGATE AND ELIMINATE UNUSUAL OR ONGOING PROBLEMS WHICH REQUIRE INDEPENDENT ACTION TO RESOLVE PRODUCTION PROBLEMS, DESIGN COMPLICATIONS AND TO DEVELOP NEW TECHNIQUES.

What You Will Do:

• UNDER GENERAL DIRECTION OF SUPERVISOR INTERPRET BROAD INSTRUCTIONS AND DRAWINGS TO PAN AND LAYOUT MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS.
• DETERMINE SEQUENCES OF PROJECT PHASES PREPARE CONTROL TAPES IN APPROPRIATE MACHINE LANGUAGE.
• ESTIMATE JOBS, AND OTHER REQUIRED SUPPORT SERVICES TO MEET CHANGING SCHEDULES PRIORITIES.
• FOLLOW-UP TO VERIFY PROJECT IS COMPLETED ON TIME AND MEETS REQUIRED SPECIFICATIONS.
• PERFORM INSTALLATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR WORK ON TOOLING. CARRY OUT PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE REQUIRED.
• INSTRUCT OTHERS IN JOB REQUIREMENTS, CARE, USE AND MAINTENANCE OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT AND SAFE WORK PRACTICES.
• DEVELOP UNIQUE WAYS TO MORE EFFECTIVELY UTILIZE TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT, TO RESOLVE ONGOING OR UNUSUAL PROBLEMS THAT CAUSE PRODUCTION BOTTLE-NECKS.
• MONITOR AND SERVICE EQUIPMENT TO ENSURE PRODUCT INTEGRITY.
• WORK ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS WITH SUPERVISORS, ENGINEERS, VENDORS OR OTHER TRADE GROUPS AND CUSTOMERS TO REVIEW AND PREPARE FOR NEW TOOLING OR EQUIPMENT INSTALLATIONS.
• COMMEND SERVICE REQUIREMENTS AND CHECK OUT OPERATIONS TO SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS.
• PERFORM SIMILAR DUTIES THROUGHOUT THE FACILITY WITHIN THE SCOPE AND SKILL LEVEL OF THIS JOB DESCRIPTION.
• ASSIST OTHER TRADES WORKING ON JOINT PROJECTS WHERE COMMON SKILL CROSSOVER PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES AND MORE EFFECTIVE USE OF AVAILABLE SKILLS.
• REFER DIFFICULTIES TO LEADER/SUPERVISOR.MAY BE REQUIRED TO TRAIN FOR OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN LICENSES, OPERATOR PERMITS AND CERTIFICATIONS WITHIN ASSIGNED TRADE SPECIALIZATIONS

Must Have Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
• REQUIRES BROAD KNOWLEDGE OF TOOLMAKING INCLUDING MACHINING METHODS, CUTTING QUALITIES OF METALS AND PLASTICS, MACHINE SHOP PRACTICES, SHOP METALLURGY AND PLATING. WORK FROM COMPLICATED DRAWINGS AND SKETCHES AND MAKE CALCULATIONS INVOLVING ADVANCED SHOP MATHEMATICS INCLUDING. & GEOMETRY. USE A VARIETY OF PRECISION MEASURING INSTRUMENTS & EQUIPMENT. EQUIVALENT TO 4 YEAR APPRENTICESHIP IN TOOL, DIE AND GAGE MAKING.
• 5 + YEARS OF EXPERIENCE.
