Program Summary

The program provides training in various machine tools, precision measuring equipment, and CAD software to create and modify tool designs. Through on-the-job training and classroom instruction, apprentices gain a foundation in the skills and knowledge necessary to work as a transfer press toolmaker. They learn to work with different materials and select the appropriate materials for specific applications. The purpose of the program is to provide individuals with the training and knowledge to become skilled professionals in the field of tool and die making for transfer press applications. Set up, troubleshooting, and production on transfer and progressive die presses.

Essential Functions:

  • Study specifications, blueprints, sketches, or tool descriptions to plan the sequence of operations.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe metal stock to lay out workpieces for machining.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, and grinder to machine parts to specifications.
  • Verify conformance of machined parts to specifications using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
  • Position and secure parts on surface plates or worktables using devices such as vises, V-blocks, and angle plates.
  • Fit and assemble parts into assemblies or mechanisms using hand tools.
  • Examine standard tools and modify tools as required.
  • Develop specifications from general descriptions and draw or sketch tools to be fabricated using drafting tools or computer software programs.
  • Perform heat treatment on tools or parts when required.
  • May specialize in specific materials such as Carbide-Tool Maker or Diamond-Tool Maker.
  • May focus solely on tool repair as a Tool Repairer.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be available for assignments on any shift (1,2, and/or 3) during the duration of the program
  • Be prepared to commit to the 4-year education and training program

On-the-Job Training:

Individuals will work with other Toolmakers and Trainers for 8000 hours (roughly a four-year program).

Compensation Information:

Starting wage progression at $21.00
