Term: Toddler Montessori Lead teaching positions are 12-month positions.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Lead Montessori Teacher is responsible for preparing the environment, ensuring an AMS Montessori classroom, working with parents, facilitating communication with other staff on the team, and addressing the needs of individual children.

Holds a Montessori Certificate from an AMS or AMI school for the appropriate specified age group, is listed with the Registry- Wisconsin’s Recognition System for the Childhood Care and Education Profession, and meets all State Licensing requirements for Child Care Teacher of the specified age group.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To maintain a Montessori Classroom:

• Follows and implements the Montessori philosophy.
• Daily preparation of the Montessori environment to accept children.
• Plans, prepares, and creates materials that are inviting and engaging to the child.
• Sets up the classroom to support child independence, and provides real work opportunities for children.
• Ensures that all areas of a Montessori classroom are represented.
• Is responsible for using the classroom allowance to maintain a full set of complete Montessori materials.
• Supports the other teachers in the classroom to develop a deeper understanding of Montessori through discussions, readings, and observations.
• Observes the children in their environment to assess their needs, skills, interests and talents.
• Provides a classroom that meets the needs of individual children.

Establishes and maintains a safe and healthy environment:

• Designs an appropriate room arrangement to support the goals of the classroom.
• Ensures that all classroom practices are in compliance with State Licensing rules and City Accreditation Standards.
• Plans and implements a healthy snack program.
• Maintains a safe environment.
• Maintains a clean and sanitary classroom.
• Follows WMS policy for attendance and knows the whereabouts of children in their care at all times.
• Promotes safe and healthy behavior between children.
• Posts necessary information to ensure the safety and well-being of the children.
• Manages emergencies and/or challenges with skill and expertise.

Establishes positive and productive relationships with families.

• Relates assessment information to parents and offers support for dealing with children at different developmental stages.
• Plans and conducts home-visits when needed.
• Promotes communication with parents through website updates, monthly newsletter, and fall and spring parent teacher conferences.
• Uses a program-approved procedure for parent teacher conferences.
• Provides a variety of ways that families can participate in the program.
• Is available for parent conferences, meetings, and phone calls.
• Is friendly, positive, and constructive when communicating any information regarding a child to a family.
• Relays any behavior or developmental concerns to the family immediately.
• Provides an orientation for each child prior to their first day.
• Provides a parent orientation evening for the parents of the class in the fall.

Ensures a well-run, purposeful program responsive to participant needs.

• Assesses program supplies and materials on a regular basis
• Coordinates and helps supervise aides, assistants, After-School Teachers, and volunteers working in the classroom.
• Maintains daily observations of children's activities.
• Assesses children's needs and developmental progress on an ongoing basis.
• Uses the results of assessment to support the child's activities and schedule.
• Daily records notes, observations, and other communication for the After-School Teacher to pass onto the parents at pick-up time.

Developing an understanding of Montessori philosophy and WMS Mission:

• Present materials
• Know existing materials, their purpose and use, and become familiar with new materials
• Understand Montessori rationale in terms of approaching each child
• Adheres to ground rules and is a role model for all
• Encourages children to be independent
• Allows activities to be child-led

• Relates all concerns regarding a child to the Lead Montessori Teacher to communicate with the family
• Is friendly and positive when communicating any information regarding a child to the family

To maintain a commitment to professionalism:

• Promotes WMS's philosophy and educational objectives.
• Follows WMS policies, procedures, and general work rules.
• Engages in ongoing staff development and continuing education to improve personal and professional skills.
• Attends all staff meetings, workshops, and in-service training provided by WMS unless the Director approves of absence.
• Attends other WMS sponsored activities.
• Acts as a role model for all in regards to personal conduct and manner.
• Responsible for maintaining productive and positive working relationships with all WMS employees, volunteers, and aids.
• Uses appropriate time for cleaning, planning, and clerical work.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Level 12 on the Wisconsin Registry
• 18 years or older
• Hold the DCF required course to work as an assistant teacher in a licensed childcare facility, Introduction to the Child Care Profession or equivalent from a higher education institution or complete required training within the first 6 months of employment

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Current CPR certification
• Abusive Head Trauma Prevention Training
• Children Abuse and Neglect Mandatory Reporter Training

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to perform all reasonable Teacher physical demands
• Must be able to lift and carry an individual weighing 80 lbs
• Must be able stand for periods greater than 6 hours
• Must be able to walk up and down stairs continuously
• Must be able to turn, squat, kneel, crouch, and bend over without issue
• Must be able to work all weekly contracted hours (besides designated break)
• Must be physically, mentally, and emotionally able to provide responsible care for all children including children with disabilities
