Position Title: Behavior Support Assistant

FLSA Status: Exempt

Responsible to: Building Principal

Supervises: n/a

Evaluated by: Building Principal

Terms of Employment: 220 days

Evaluation Period
  • Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per MCS Performance and Assessment procedures.
  • Annual evaluation prior to July 1.
Purpose of the Position

Serves as a resource/contact person for students who display inappropriate behaviors due to poor home life, excessive absences, tardiness, or truancies, poor social skills, and/or low academic performance. Provides instruction based on student needs and supports academic & behavioral progress to allow them to remain in the general school environment working toward a high school diploma and graduation.

Classified as Confidential Employee: Functional responsibilities or knowledge in connection with the issues involved in dealings between the school corporation and its employees require strict adherence to confidentiality.

Minimum Requirements
  • Successful completion of 48 hours of college credit or Paraprofessional Test
  • Meet particular requirements of local, state, and federal programs, especially in terms of confidentiality.
  • Must be CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Trained or be willing to complete training.
Essential Functions of the Position
  • Work with students with academic & behavioral difficulties.
  • Relate well with children and parents, treating all children, parents, and staff with dignity and respect.
  • Assist teachers in any way possible.
  • Assist in maintaining a positive learning environment in the classroom.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Assess a student's social needs and provide appropriate strategies to meet those needs.
  • Complete and be accountable for the paperwork that includes the interventions/strategies or other requested data for the students targeted for this support.
  • Implement activities that are multicultural, gender-fair, and disability sensitive.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all students.
  • Communicate progress and outcomes with the school administrative team.
  • Encourage parents to become involved in their child's education.
  • Telephone or visit parents, as necessary, to encourage parent involvement.
  • Promote parent involvement in all school functions and activities.
Secondary Functions of the Position
  • Facilitate positive interactions between students and teachers, students and peers, and students and other adults.
  • Model learning and behavior consistent with the expectations for students.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Building Principal and/or the Superintendent.

  • Must be able to walk, sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to intercede with student elopement (run, walk quickly).

  • Must be able to carry up to 25 lbs. if necessary.
