Job summary

The New York State Thruway Authority is seeking a Maintenance Worker Trainee/Journey Level to perform paving, patching, and extensive bridge/highway maintenance tasks along with related structural work.

Candidates must hold a NYS CDL Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction, and have experience operating construction equipment. The position offers Teamsters benefits, paid time off, and onsite parking.

Qualifications

• Possession of a NYS CDL Class B permit with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction.
• Additional CDL Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction may be required for certain roles.
• Experience in operating construction equipment and vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Pave, patch, and perform right-of-way maintenance and drainage work.
• Repair fences, lighting, signs, and guide rails; assist with scaffolding and cribbing.
• Operate gasoline/diesel construction equipment and snow/ice control vehicles as needed.
• Perform concrete/steel repairs and various building tasks on bridges and highways.

Tasks include paving, patching, right-of-way maintenance, underdrain installation, shoulder and slope restoration, crack pouring, drainage structure repair, repair and erection of fences, lighting, guide rails, delineators and signs. Also building temporary structures and chutes for removal of debris, fabricating and erecting scaffolding, cribbing, staging and shoring; performing concrete and steel repairs (including removal of concrete with pneumatic tolls and sand blasting steel and concrete), painting and stream channel maintenance. Will be required to operate a variety of gasoline and diesel driven construction equipment and vehicles in the performance of bridge, highway, and facility operations, maintenance and/or construction activities, in addition to snow and ice control equipment vehicles including front-end loaders, truck with plows, spreaders, and tractors.

• Possession of a valid NYS Commercial Driver License Class B Permit with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction.
• Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 - 24 Month Traineeship
• One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1
• OR
• Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction, AND, six months of experience operating construction equipment vehicles, AND, twelve months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.
• OR
• A valid Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and eighteen months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles.
• Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 3 - 12 Month Traineeship
• One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2
• OR
• Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction, AND, twelve months of experience in operating construction equipment and vehicles, AND, eighteen months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.
• Thruway Maintenance Worker: JOURNEY LEVEL
• Satisfactory completion of a three-year Thruway Maintenance Worker Traineeship.
• OR
• Possession of a New York State Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction, AND, one year of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles, AND, two years of experience in carpentry, masonry, ironwork, welding, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.

Additional Pay Information

The salary range for this position includes all applicable annual components of pay which are:

• Base Pay: $21.89 – 27.00
• Geographic Pay: $3.37

This position may be filled as a traineeship. The starting salaries for this traineeship are outlined below. For current New York State employees, salary is based on the candidate’s salary at the time of hire.

• $25.26 (Trainee 1)
• $26.87 (Trainee 2)
• $28.46 (Trainee 3)
• $30.37 (Journey Level)
