Job description

Hearts for the Homeless, a faith-based non-profit, was founded in 1990 with a mission to serve the chronic homeless as well as other underserved populations. Hearts is able to fund its mission through donor support and entrepreneurial ventures such as the thrift store operation and donated goods recycling program. The red clothing donation bins provide items that are given away to those in need. Donated items are also turned into dollars which support outreach programs such as the mobile soup kitchen and food pantry.

Position Summary:

The Donation Processor and Receiver (DPR) will be responsible for the production process of donations from donors to retail. This includes, but is not limited to, accepting, sorting, and pricing donated items. The DPR will be in compliance with company policies and standards, procedures, and the Hearts Thrift Stores’ Mission Statement.

Essential Functions:

  1. Perform any required job duties within the processing team, including accepting donations, presorting, and pricing merchandise.
  2. Complete the production process by separating and sorting incoming donated materials.
  3. Recognize quality merchandise and seek guidance on pricing from the Donated Goods Manager.
  4. Tag, price, and arrange merchandise according to company policy.
  5. Produce quick and accurate work in a fast-paced environment.
  6. Report production metrics daily, including communication on barriers to meet production requirements.
  7. Maintain clean and organized reception, presort, and processing areas, ensuring readiness for the next shift.
  8. Take inventories of needed merchandise and report to the manager.
  9. Understand and comply with policies related to donated items, including prohibited items and pricing guides.
  10. Obtain and maintain electric pallet jack and forklift certification.
  11. Act independently and responsibly to perform job duties consistently.
  12. Follow and maintain the code of conduct as outlined in the employee handbook.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements and Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  2. Forklift and/or electric pallet jack certification preferred.
  3. Reliable and punctual attendance, with availability to work flexible shifts.
  4. Sales experience preferred.
  5. Experience working with volunteers is preferred.
  6. Ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment.
  7. Self-starter with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  8. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  9. Must be able to lift and move boxes and bags of donated items up to 35 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Excellent customer service and people skills.
  2. Excellent communication, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
  3. Principles and practices of supervising, training, and evaluating staff.
  4. Attention to detail.
  5. Computer skills including Point of Sales System, Google Docs, email, and Microsoft Word.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 per hour
